Cloth nappies - what to do at night with a newborn?

Hi everyone,

First baby due next month - am all set up to use cloth nappies and have gone for the Bimbles QD with Motherease Rikki wraps.

I'm a bit stuck about what I should do at night though - will I need to change the nappy at night, or only if there's a poo? If so, I've heard you can't smell poos through a cloth nappy and wrap, so how are you supposed to know what do to do. I'll be breastfeeding, but hopefully in the dark and with minimal disturbance / stimulation.. (Maybe that's wishful thinking for first few weeks!)

Aside from poos though, would a Bimble nappy last the night anyway, or should I use a booster?

I also have some eco disposables for emergencies...maybe I should just use them at night?

Any advice appreciated - thanks!

Hi, I used Bimbles at night with Rikki wrap when mine was newborn, I used to do a change at the 10-11pm ish feed before I went to bed and then unless they've pooed in the night change again in morning 6am ish. This was for minimum disturbance and it lasted fine without any extra boosters. I did also use up a pack of disposibles at night for the first couple of weeks.
I think you can still smell when they have pooed the same as in a disposible personally.

Thanks Mumface, that's really helpful. Out of interest, how did you get on with
the Bimbles - did you stick with them or switch to another kind when your baby was bigger?

I love Bimbles - I'm still trying to squeeze my 10 week old into his! At night I use a bamboozle with a booster and it lasts all night. In the early days when he was pooing at night or feeding alot I'd change him once or twice a night and the bimble was absolutely fine. You can usually hear or feel when they poo (IME they tend to poo during or just after a feed!)

Now he's growing out of his bimbles I am moving on to Bamboozles (ones I used for his brother) and I might treat myself to some new fluff I tend to stick with a 2 part system (with a couple of pockets for when he's being looked after by a nappy novice!) as the 2 parters have proved much more reliable. I've never had a leak with a 2 parter, despite some massive poonamis!

Hattie- I moved onto flexi-tots and Bambinex microfibre for a few months as I already had them from previous baby and they are great as are the new tots stretchies. Now at 12 months I am finding he's a much lighter wetter and too wriggly for 2 parters and use various pockets- Rumparooz, Blueberries and Weenotions.

Thanks all - very useful. I've got a stash of Bambinex Teddies lined up for when the baby is a bit bigger, so pleased you liked them Mumface.

There are three sizes of the Bimbles Ziggy - so you can carry with them if you like them that much?
