I can't believe my daughter has worn a whole in her start-rite shoe!!

Hi, I was really shocked to see that my daughter has worn a whole inside the lining of her shoe, where her big tow had been rubing some how.
She has had the shoes for about four and a half months now, but they still fit her. She's always had start-rite shoes and I've never had any problems with them before. I'm not sure what to do now. Do I buy start-rite again, or try Clarks or similar ?
I don't feel it's realy fair to take then back, as she's had them so long and they won't fit her that much longer either. She hasn't complained that they are hurting or anything, It's just really unusual.
Has anyone else had this problem with start-rite?
Could you recommend any other shoes that are better quality ? They'd need to be fitted as she has wide feet.

if they still fit her her foot shouldn't be rubbing on it at all.

i would take them back to where you got them and just ask them what they think. it may be that she has outgrown them width-wise but still has room at the front. or it could be another problem

IME start-rite are pretty good quality

Start right shoes are not normally very good, ds's fell apart on more then one occasion, he never had a hole though, no holes, really, no holes.

They are fine width ways and length, I check them regularly. It's only one foot and the whole is directly under the big tow. It's like friction, maybe her straps were not tight enough ? She puts her shoes on herslf as they are velcro, so maybe she dosn't do them tight enough.

hmm the style is maybe too shallow for her if her toe is rubbing on the top of the shoe

it's def worth taking them back though, you may get a part refund or some credit towards a different pair

mummyloveslucy · 12/07/2010 20:21

It's not the top of the shoe, it's the sole. If I look into her shoes, I can see a faint imprint of all her tows and a whole where the big tow sits.

oh sorry! god i;m being stupid tonight!

well i def would take them abck. i would expect an expensive pair of shoes to last longer than 4 or 5 months...

dd1 regularly wears out her start rite shoes.

she walks. a LOT

she has worn down the lining sole before, many times.

we use a really good shoe shop at the moment, who are happy to exchange for us, and return to start rite, any shoes they think don't measure up {ha!}

the last pair we bought (as in paid real money for) for dd1 was in October. then we took her to be checked for fit in March, and the wear was so shocking that hey exchanged for us, and had the same happen two weeks ago. so 3 pairs for the price of one.

dd1 is nearly 6, btw, so isn't growing out of shoes every five minutes any more. she is a size 12, and the shop reckon they are made to be good for a year's worth of wear.

Lucy does walk a lot too. I think I will take them back and see what they say. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. It is a lot of money to spend, for a whole to appear.

MLL - did you ever go on the dolphin holiday or whatever it was you won earlier this year?

mummyloveslucy · 13/07/2010 19:56

Yes, we did. It was fantastic! We went to Florida for a week and had a day at Discovery cove, swimming with dolphins and unlimited acess to sea world, Aquatica and Busch Gaedens.
My daughter loved it and we have a lovely picture of her kissing a dolphin.

oh that is brilliant. I remember you winning the comp and there was this mad rush to try and find you to let you know! (I was under a different name then).

Glad to hear you had a really good time.

LIZS · 13/07/2010 20:27

I'd suggest she has been sitting in class bending and rubbing her toe against the sole. Many children with SN's have a sensory need, almost like a calming reflex, so that they can concentrate on the task in hand. If it is only the insole you should be able to replace it but she'll probably need new shoes for September anyway. Take these along when you next go "to have the fit checked" and comment on the lining. btw ds never says his shoes are too small, last time he went from a 1.5 to 3.

mummyloveslucy · 14/07/2010 15:28

Oh that's interesting LIZS. She does have a favourate toy that she scratches with one finger and wears wholes in it. She also never says that her shoes are too small.
That could be it then.

DS had shoes from start-rite that wore through the toes after only a few weeks. Was not impressed and took them back to the (independent) shop I bought them from but they were little use tbh. They said I could get in touch with start-rite which I did but they said I needed to send the shoes to them and they woukd consider what to do. In the ebd I didn't send them back as would have needed something else for ds to wear in thd mean time and they might not have refunded me anyway.

Have found clarks better this year
