Is it dangerous to give a 2.5 year old a pillow?

My son (2.5 years)asked for pillow last night in his cot. This morning my inlaws have told me they think this is dangerous as it could suffocate him were it to go on his head. I can't see this but thought I would check if anyone else thinks this is dangerous. Thanks v much

They can have a pillow and duvet from 12 months iirc.

My dd (2.2) has a duvet and a small pillow (although she doesn't really use the pillow). If it went on her head she would take it off. Or if she got tangled in the duvet she would shout for me.

it's only potentailly dangerous for children under a year old.

At 2.5 he's more than capable of flinging it off the bed if he doesn't want it and his survival instincts would also have hime throw it off it it went on top of his face.

My DS (2.7) has a pillow and has had one available since he was 20mo - he's been fine with it. It's a feather one, fairly flattened, and so far he's never managed to get underneath it or pull it onto his head. Sometimes he moves down off it as he wants to sleep on his tummy but other times he will stay on his side with his head on the pillow.

thnaks v much for the replies. I thought this was the case. He can climb out of his cot so I did n't think a pillow would be too bad. Thanks

they are absolutely fine dd has had one since 18 months because she kept acquiring mine every night.

I bought a toddler sized one which is lighter because I was worried that at 18 months she might struggle with a large adult pillow. Now wouldn't have an issue with an adult sized pillow at 2.7.

liamsdaddy · 14/07/2010 11:00

DS had a pillow from about 13 months ish. It was a light cot-sized pillow.

We found it helped with a cougth he had. Mostly he does use it, sometimes he will move to sleep without it. Sometimes he will swap ends and move it to the other end.

The first time I found him sleeping with the pillow on top of himself I did almost have a heart attack mind you...

At 2.5 he is old enough for a pillow (12 months is the usual guideline) and a bit old to be in a cot IMHO. It's more dangerous that he can climb out of his cot.

LarkinSky · 14/07/2010 13:11

DD has had a pillow since 12 months, and sleeps very well on it. It's a light 100% cotton filling one from Ikea. She can't sleep without it now.

WreckOfTheHesperus · 14/07/2010 13:13

My DD has a pillow in a case that's attached to the undersheet; seems to work well

lovechoc · 14/07/2010 19:48

DS has been sleeping in a double bed with a duvet and 4 pillows since he was 23 months old. He is still alive today and no harm has come to him. Perfectly fine at that age.

DreamTeamGirl · 14/07/2010 23:02

My DS has had a pillow (albeit under the sheet) since he was 5 months old for his reflux.
No problem at all with a 23 month old

mamasunshine · 15/07/2010 09:45

ds1 has slept in a bed with pillow and duvet since 19 months and no problems here either! Agree with post that would find the fact he can climb out of the cot more worrying.

chiccadee · 15/07/2010 09:48

No problem with pillow. Bit that a 2.5 yo is still in a cot, especially if he can climb out. Is there any reason why you've not moved him into a bed stressed2007?

stressed2007 · 16/07/2010 08:09

He has only just started climbing out. I watched him do it last night - he is v adept. Just not got round to getting a bed - will do this soon (oh the thought of deciding white/pine, trundles/non trundles/ cabin bed etc again - oh joy).
