My 8 year old daughter has started spotting and I think her periods are on the way - can anyone suggest a good book for me to help her through this transition as such a young age? Thanks

Sorry, no, but could you ask the school whether you could borrow their sex ed video and show the appropriate bits? I've just taught about periods using our (called Living and Growing) and it explains it in quite a simple way and puts it in context.

I'd pop and see the GP, 8 is very young for periods, they generally start 12 months after discharge makes its appearance. You should have a chat with the GP.

There are girls in DD1's class who have started and she's 8.

Good god! Can you imagine a pregnant 8 year old!

Really, have a chat with the GP, it's called precocious puberty, they can give medication to hold it back.

I'm sure it's normal, but do see your GP first. My mum started her periods at 9 and I started mine at 10. We're both fine, incidentally :-)

I started my periods at 9. 8 is the very earliest that is considered normal iyswim.

Does this seem in keeping with the rest of her pubertal development? If not then I would def. go to your GP.

Ws about to say that 8 is within the normal range. Under 8 is considered precocious.

There are a few girls acroos the two classes in DS year group, Year 3, who have started (I know the mums)

8 is considered early but within normal range, from what they said to me.

I think they borrowed the video school use, that helped.

There are quite a few other girls in the year group who are having to wear deoderant.

My DD was seen by a consultant at the local hospital when she was 7 , for the onset of puberty. She was monitored for a year until she reached her 8th birthday, and then discharged.

The consultant discharged her because anything over 8 years old - puberty wise is now considered normal.

DD is now 10 and although she has developed womanly curves, spots, body odour and has grown body hair, she has yet to start her periods.

My advice would be to get the spotting checked out by your Gp- unless she has all the other signs of starting puberty it may not be that.
