Will watching ET freak out an easily scared 6 year old?!

Help me out, as I can't remember it! Saw it years ago and remember it's sad but not a lot more than that. DS was scared by Ice Age not too long ago, so he's not the bravest. Anyone know it better than me??

Hmm, not sure I would - my three have watched and were a little scared, but they love scary films so are pretty hardened. My youngest is 7.

ET is fine, a sweet film that is not too scary but quite sad in places.

ET gave me nightmares for years!!!

aw not it's ok i would say. more sad. though i never cried when i saw it at the pictures

notnowbernard · 11/07/2010 20:26

I remember watching it at about 5yr old at the cinema

I had to be led out by my mortified mother as I was so completely and utterly distressed by it (the sadness of it)

And I remember crying all the way home, on the bus

She's never let me forget it

I lose it if I watch it now

my 7 yr old is PETRIFIED of ET

The other 2 only have to say '....E....T' and he runs off screaming

nappyzoneloveschinesefood · 11/07/2010 20:30

I saw it at 8 and spent the next 4 yrs scared to lift up a toilet seat in case et popped out.

fifitot · 11/07/2010 20:32

My 4 year old saw and loved it - though it was probably a bit old for her tbh. She's not easily scared though.

mmm, am not sure if you're helping!! Thanks though. It's a school trip - they've been invited to a free screening. I don't want him to be the odd one out by saying he can't go, but don't want him to be terrified or sob his heart out in front of his mates either.

DD saw it last year aged 8, she was really quite disturbed by him changing colour. She adores it now though. IIWY, I think I would get some clips off youtube or some still photographs so your DS won't be freaked out if he goes. There's nothing like losing face in front of your mates.

snigs · 12/07/2010 13:31

Thanks Kreecher. Should have thought of YouTube. I might have a quiet word with his teacher too. Bit miffed they're taking the kids to see it really, as it doesn't seem very thought through.

It is a certificate U and I think it is more upsetting than scary. But, tbh, most childrens films are one or both. I suppose it would be hard to choose any film, taking into account more sensitive children.

snigs · 12/07/2010 20:43

SalF, it's definitely PG, which is why I'm a bit at the school, as they're only Yr1. Think they probably haven't even realised as it's not like them. You're right though, virtually anything might be a problem for DS. Not sure if trip's even going ahead though now, as rumour is it might be cancelled - fingers crossed it will be. How mean am I?!

SalFresco · 12/07/2010 22:43

Snigs, the original film itself is a U but newer DVD editions have it as a PG becuase of the content of the extra features - which I mention not to be snidey, but because it might reassure you in terms of the suitability of the film itself (although if the school have chosen it without considering this, that is a bit )

I was trying to think of children's films that aren't upsetting, and it is really hard, Disney films are particularly heart rending!

I hope the trip goes well (if it happens - you mean mummy )

snigs · 13/07/2010 18:45

Thanks SalFresco, that makes sense. I know what you mean about it being hard to find a film that would work. DS can't even watch Finding Nemo without hiding when the Shark comes on, so am still hoping trip's cancelled. Yes, I truly am a mean mummy.
