Is anyone up? Think a burglar just knocked on the door and I'm a bit shaken

Just got woken up by the doorbell at 4.30am. the door is mainly frosted glass so I could see a large man on the other side. He said "I'm your neighbour from 38, I need change for the gas meter" and he bent down as if he was going to post a note through the door. He had keys in his hand.

I said "I've not got any change mate" and he walked off.

He's not my bloody neighbour. For a start I know what most of them look like, and more importantly he got the number wrong, so was definitely lying. He said he was from 38 but I'm at 38!

My and DS are home alone and I feel a bit shaken, and I can't sleep. I'm at my parents' house (we're staying here mid-week as we've moved to a new town, but there's a bit of overlap with my job). My parents went away for their summer holiday two days ago. DP is at the new place tonight, back later today.

My parents live in Hackney, and have been burgled a number of times over the years. There was an attempt not very long ago. I think this guy might have seen my parents go away and was checking whether the house was empty.

I feel quite scared actually. I was worried he was going to come back,, but i guess if they want to find out if there's someone in, and I;m in then they've probably gone away haven't they?

I want to call DP, but I'm not going to because it's so early in the morning there's no point in him being awake too. He's too far away to be any use.

Should I be worried they'll come back? all the doors are locked before you ask!

If anyone's there I'd appreciate a chat I feel a but out of sorts.

Can't sleep

No idea what to suggest sorry!
But didn't want you to think no-one was here.
Have you managed to calm down a little yet?

It sounds really suspicious, especially as he said the house number you are at and why would you need gas money at that time, not like it's freezing and need heating on.

I would report it to the local police station in the morning and ask them what to suggest.

Thanks gillybean2. I don't think there's anything I can do. Just wish I could sleep!
Mnetting has calmed me down a bit actually.

I'm going to try to sleep in a bit, with the phone in my hand!

Oh god, just heard a noise, and had to go look at what it was. It was nothing (this is an old house with all sorts of creaks and groans) but I'm still really jumpy.

If he was a burglar he was knocking to see if anyone was in, so he won't be back!

I've had a similar thing, but in the afternoon. Probably accept you aren't going back to sleep, turn all the downstairs lights on and have a loud conversation with your DP, who is also there with you!

If you are worried, call the local station now. He might be trying another house, so they might send a car to drive round the area.

"If he was a burglar he was knocking to see if anyone was in, so he won't be back!"
Thanks for the reassurance Ohforfoxsake that's what I'm trying to tell myself!

I looked to see if he'd gone to bother our neighbours after he walked away, but by the time I got to the window he'd gone.

I did think of calling the police station, but IME (reporting several stolen / lost phones over the years) it can take a very long time to get through. And I thought to myself, a burglar in Hackney, that's hardly news to them is it? But maybe I was just being pessimistic!

Right this bastard's had my awake for over an hour now. I'm going to have another go at sleeping!

Thanks you two, it helped to do a bit of mneting I've calmed down a bit now.

i would phone the local police station to. they can send a car to drive around the area. i had a simlar thing the other night and had phone in my hand with number for police just incase person came back. i turned the lights on and eventually went back to sleep 1.5 hours later. i now sleep with bed side light on! hubby is away ( forces) so he's no use to me either! hope you get some sleep but you'll feel on edge for a while! sorry! but mn is here! good luck

Ohforfoxsake · 06/07/2010 05:46

Bloody hell! My back gate just creaked and I jumped!

If you're still twitchy call the station. Surely, even in Hackney, they won't be that busy at 5.45 am!

giraffesCanDanceInTheSun · 06/07/2010 05:48

Oh how scary.

Definetly let police know and give a descrition. When I was broken in to a community police officer came out and gave advice on things that could help tp protect against further burglaries.

lowrib · 06/07/2010 05:57

Thanks ben5 and giraffesCanDanceInTheSun. I expect you're right, but it's nearly an hour and a half since he called now, I suspect he's long gone now. I should have called them at the time really, I see that now. Grrr. Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Nice tea BTW

Ohforfoxsake I'm sorry I didn't mean to pass my jumpiness on!

I'm going t try to sleep now. Only have to get up on an hour. Hu hum!

I would definitely phone your local police station and tell them what happened.

Hope you are ok. What a fright for you.
