Urgent Advice needed - 7month old has just put a DEAD VOLE in his mouth

Can anyone give me any advice, I have just turned round (5 mins ago) and seen my 7 month old ds with a dead vole in his hand happilly waving it at me. I guess its gone in his mouth as everything goes in there at the moment and I have (after struggling to get the bloody thing off him - me shouting drop it and him crying and holding on tighter) washed him hands and his mouth out - should I do anything else - apart from Kill the cat???

Spikeycat you should call nhs direct I should think to see if they recommend a tetenus (sp) jab?

If it's any consolation my brother used to eat worms and he is fine!

Boe · 16/07/2003 11:29

No advice but: EEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

YES DO KILL THE CAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

codswallop · 16/07/2003 11:29

Go to your surgery

Jimjams · 16/07/2003 11:30

wouldn't worry spikeycat. The only problem would be if the thing had bitten him (and being dead I assume it wouldn't). The main (very small) risk from bites is tetanus, but if your ds has had dtp they wouldn't give anything else anyway.

Gross- but if its freshly killed won't be going off so shouldn't be a problem.

Jimjams · 16/07/2003 11:30

Hope it wasn't a water vole- they're an endagered species

spikeycat · 16/07/2003 11:31

Its really helped the morning sickness to - which I had been managing to stave off, I have been hurling ever since - I am sure I will look back on this and laugh - but not yet! Have phoned NHS direct and am waiting for them to call back - Everytime I think of it I reach!!

they are really beautiful as well - Bloody cat
I think it was a fresh kill as it was still floppy.
The annoying thing is the cat hasn't bought anything in for ages, its done it today I am sure as he doesn't like the cat food I have got him and hasn't eaten anything apart from his cat crunchies for about two days - I think its a protest

well, still no phone call from NHS direct so I called our practice nurse who told me to call Ped A & E - they have told me to keep a close eye on him, any temp, sickness or runny tums and I have to take him in. And they laughed as well, which I didn't mind... Now, wheres that cat

Thank goodness... is it OK to laugh? I've been giggling furiously at this thread !

I'm sure he'll be fine provided he's not taken a bite out of it.

ThomCat · 16/07/2003 13:12

Oh spikeycat - you poor thing. I did have to laugh though, it was the image of you struggling to take it off him, eeeggggggghhhhhhhhhh, that must have been gross, I won't even go there or you'll be retching all over again!

WideWebWitch · 16/07/2003 13:15

Me too Soupdragon but I didn't like to admit it. I will now you have though

SamboM · 16/07/2003 13:18

Actually Spikeycat I laughed till I cried at the title of this thread (before I realised how upsetting it was!)

M2T · 16/07/2003 13:23

(..... sneaks in.... >chortle< ..... sneaks back out.)

Seriously though.... I'm sure your ds will be just fine.

Boe · 16/07/2003 13:28

Is a vole like a mouse type thing???

spikeycat · 16/07/2003 13:30

it is funny - it will be a funny story for when he grows up!!
It was so hard to get off him as I didn't really want to touch it either and I had him on lap shaking his hand saying "drop drop" (like he can understand!)

M2T · 16/07/2003 13:39

Oh Spikeycat! I have this wonderful image now! LOL.

WM - good source of protein I hear.

whymummy · 16/07/2003 13:41

donnie · 16/07/2003 14:33

don't kill the moggie spikeycat - it's freed the world from one less rodent.....the only good rodent is a dead one IMO !!!!

SoupDragon · 16/07/2003 15:36

I'm almost crying again... "Drop it! Drop it" That's priceless!! I wouldn't have touched it either - I may even have had to let him play with it till I could get some rubber gloves or maybe a neighbour!

spikeycat · 16/07/2003 16:35

A vole is like a tiny mouse with a long nose like an ant eater - they are v v v pretty.

I can't get rid the image of him waving it about and smiling at me, and I have to say that it is a funny one

codswallop · 16/07/2003 18:16

whats spanish for Vole Why?

whymummy · 16/07/2003 18:19

i dont know cod a mole is a topo in spanish, but vole?ill have to find out or maybe is just an english rodent

princesspeahead · 16/07/2003 18:51

that is hilarious I'm afraid!
he probably didn't put it in his mouth, if it was still warm and lovely and furry he was probably just making friends with it!

I also love the idea that your first thought after liberating the dead vole was to post on mumsnet... you never know, we might all have said "oh this has happened to us HUNDREDS of times, don't worry about it!"

hope he (and you) are fine still!!
