Boy IMO.

MrsDoolittle · 12/08/2005 10:32

I have come across it in both

eidsvold · 12/08/2005 10:32

I always thought it was a boy's name but I think from memory Brooke Shields named her little girl Rowan.

expatinscotland · 12/08/2005 10:32

It's a name for a tree, IMO.

swiperfox · 12/08/2005 10:33

I would say boy too

Know a boy Rowan. Think it's very sweet.

Tinker · 12/08/2005 10:37

And Rowan Atkinson, of course.

binkie · 12/08/2005 10:39

Either, really. We know a Rowan (who's a girl) and when I first saw the name I assumed boy; but having got to know this very girlie, pretty little Rowan it suits her well.

If you're doubtful about Rowan for a boy you could always go with Owen ...

CarolinaMoon · 12/08/2005 10:42

I know a lovely little boy called Rowan and it suits him very well.

Don't know any female Rowans personally, but there is a female journo called Rowan Pelling.

So either, I would say.

I think Brooke Shields' daughter is called Rowan and Sharon Stone's son is called Roan (I know too much celeb gossip).

Kelly1978 · 12/08/2005 11:46

there is a history of the usuages in Britain for men and woman \link(www.medievalscotland.org/problem/names/rowan.shtml\here}

Kelly1978 · 12/08/2005 11:46

sorry here

expatinscotland · 12/08/2005 11:47

Sharon Stone called one of hers 'Ronan'. Nice. But she called hte other one 'Laird'. Beyond naff.

Kelly1978 · 12/08/2005 11:48

Rohan is a Indian boys name, meanign ascending. I was quite tempted by that.

DissLocated · 12/08/2005 11:50

Rowan was one of the names I considered for dd. I think it's really nice, we wanted a natural sounding name that was a bit different, we went with Willow in the end.

QueenOfQuotes · 12/08/2005 11:50

Boy.

One of my best friends at school has a little sister - who's father STILL insists on calling her Rowan............because he was convinced she was going to be a boy and that was the name he picked for her.

Her actual name is Rowena.

Dahlia · 12/08/2005 12:25

I know a boy and a girl both called Rowan - personally prefer it for a girl, but its certainly suitable for both.

NomDePlume · 12/08/2005 12:34

Either, I thibk, but I went to scholl with a boy called Rowan . I like it for either. You could go for the alterntive spelling of Roan (like the horse).

According to Baby-names-plus.com, Rowan can be either, it features in both the girls list and the boys

Lio · 12/08/2005 13:13

Either. Beautiful name.

tallulah · 12/08/2005 13:31

Both, according to the Oxford Minidictionary of First Names.

"As a boys name this is from a surname of Irish origin, derived from an old Irish personal name RUADHAN. Alt RONAN; cf ROY.

As a girls name it is taken from the name (of Scandinavian origin) of the tree".

welshmum · 12/08/2005 13:39

It's a name for archbishops
