I have come across it in both

I always thought it was a boy's name but I think from memory Brooke Shields named her little girl Rowan.

It's a name for a tree, IMO.

Either, really. We know a Rowan (who's a girl) and when I first saw the name I assumed boy; but having got to know this very girlie, pretty little Rowan it suits her well.

If you're doubtful about Rowan for a boy you could always go with Owen ...

I know a lovely little boy called Rowan and it suits him very well.

Don't know any female Rowans personally, but there is a female journo called Rowan Pelling.

I think Brooke Shields' daughter is called Rowan and Sharon Stone's son is called Roan (I know too much celeb gossip).

Sharon Stone called one of hers 'Ronan'. Nice. But she called hte other one 'Laird'. Beyond naff.

Rohan is a Indian boys name, meanign ascending. I was quite tempted by that.

Rowan was one of the names I considered for dd. I think it's really nice, we wanted a natural sounding name that was a bit different, we went with Willow in the end.

One of my best friends at school has a little sister - who's father STILL insists on calling her Rowan............because he was convinced she was going to be a boy and that was the name he picked for her.

Her actual name is Rowena.

Either, I thibk, but I went to scholl with a boy called Rowan . I like it for either. You could go for the alterntive spelling of Roan (like the horse).
