Any triathletes out there?

Hello,

I'm considering training to compete in a triathlon at the end of the summer. Does anyone here already do triathlons? I already swim and cycle regularly and run when I can be arsed!! I really struggle to motivate myself to run, although I do enjoy it when I get going.

Is there anyone out there who would like to be my training buddy?

Personally, no.

But dh is a triathlete. He also struggles with running motivation.

I'd recommend joining a local triathlon club and having a look at the magazine 220 Triathlon.

I'm a wannabe triathlete and doing my first sprint tri (perhaps only sprint tri) on Saturday.

I started off running and added in the swim. I bike enough to be able to do the distance (20k) but it's not going to be fast. Not that the swim or run will be fast...

Which triathlon?

Thanks for those replies.

I've got myself a magazine (can't believe how expensive some of the kit can be).

I've thought about joining a club but OH never finishes work at the same time day to day so it might be hard to commit to training at the same time every week.

Good luck on Saturday JJ, let me know how you get on.

I'm thinking of going in for a "Tri a Triathlon" event in Henley-on-Thames in September as it's quite near to me , but not decided yet.

A friend's husband is triathlon secretary for Hemel Hempstead Cycling club. And another (female) friend runs with Gade Valley Harriers and has just started doing triathlons.

So if you contacted either of those clubs you'd find people who would welcome you I'm sure.

You wouldn't get me doing it though!

I was just at a triathlon training day at Dorney Lake. They're having a women's only race day there on 3 July with the shortest distance being 200m/5k/2.5k swim/bike/run. I might do the sprint distance (750m/20k/5k) there, too, depending on how Saturday goes and if I can resolve transportation issues that weekend.

The link would be helpful - here it is.

I bike and swim on my own (and have had a few personal trainer sessions) but have been running with a friend for over three years. It definitely helps motivation, although admittedly we bail and just have coffee sometimes.

I am going to try talking a woman at school into doing one with me because she seemed interested last week or maybe the week before. Are you her? My name's a giveaway and I'm F's mother.

I love all three triathlon bits, but I mainly swim breastroke and can't bear doing front crawl, especially in open water - bleeuurgh! But it it faster and you look less daft doing that. So I would also love to hear about some tips for tri. Say, with swimming, is it a good idea to have some lessons on technique?

Tattyhead78 · 02/06/2010 21:42

PS, also, sorry for thread hijack, but does anyone know why you can compete in a triathlon but do compete in cycling you need a racing licence?

JJ · 03/06/2010 12:28

I think that a day license from the BTF comes with the registration - it does with Blenheim, at least. And people can get money back if they're already members by showing their card.

Personally, I feel like I should have gotten my act together to have at least a couple of lessons on technique.

I'm so nervous about Saturday. My husband's away as is everyone else who would go with me, so I'm on my own. sob.

TheOriginalPranksta - have you registered yet? That usually kicks me into training mode.

TheOriginalPranksta · 03/06/2010 16:21

I haven't registered for anything yet, no. There are a lot of events to choose from!!

The Tri-a-tri I was looking at is in an outdoor swimming pool rather than open-water so I'm leaning towards doing that. I've looked into open-water swimming lessons but they are quite expensive so I'll have to save up. I'd like to get some help with sighting and try and build my confidence first.

I don't think I do know you JJ, but it sounds like you live quite near to me!!

TheOriginalPranksta - I don't live near you, I was just completely confused and missed it when you said where you were. Too bad it wasn't you with whom I had the conversation at school! I will have to keep stalking her.

I did my first this past weekend. Was great fun and I highly recommend. Have signed up for the Human Race one at Dorney Lake in July.
