I'd always have the anti-emetic too - I've been horribly sick after GA and always follow the nil by mouth instructions because I'm too scared of a nurse holding a bowl with my "proper" sick in and frowning at me!

I've had 3 GA's and apart from the first one, I just woke up groggy and a little confused but was fine after I'd come to properly. The first time I had GA was when I was 5 and I threw up whilst sucking a sweet. I think that was more because I was so young though!

I also agree that it can depend on what the procedure is.

I had a general anaesthetic last month for a hernia op and i felt fine but i was shivering uncontrollably for about 10mins after i woke up,the nurses had to put a towel round my head and rub my arms and legs for a while cos i was soooo cold, but apart from that i was fine.

twiglett, you may well be best having the anti-emetic anyway, if you are prone to feeling sick after anasthesia.

Top tip - try not to doze afterwards even though you may feel like it. I always find if I've slept after the op in the day, I'm up all night wide awake. I also find the tiredness can last for a few days after it all as well.

I agree it depends on the procedure as well. If it's a long one, for example, it takes longer to wear off. I had major joint surgery w/one, and they doped me up with loads of pain meds both in the joint and in my IV, so it took a while to come round and that's when I had the sorest throat.
