gift for sister who's emigrating

hi all

my sis and her family are emigrating to Australia in a few weeks time and I'd like to get her a gift of some sort. Their furniture and bulky items have already been shipped so it's got to be something that can be packed quite easily and not take up too much space or be too heavy.

Any ideas?

Has she got a computer? If so get her a web cam (and yourself) then you can spy on each other

A web cam is an excellent idea if they are moving to a city sadly we are just outside Auckland and too rural for one to work so my family bought me a necklace and earrings which I wear all the time.

they're going to Melbourne (my sister will be working at the children's hospital there) so should be okay huh? I've just checked the Logitech website and there are quite a few to choose from so I think I'll leave it until I'm more wide awake tomoorw before ordering one.
DH says we'll have to get Broadband though now to make the connection and pictures better. Oh, what a shame!

Mckenzie, the webcam sounds like a good idea. If you get a microphone too and download netmeeting, which is free, you'll be able to chat to and see your sister without paying huge phone bills. Ex and I sometimes do this, I posted details here

thanks a million WWW. I'm on the case right now.
and I'm going to order the web cams on the internet and get my sister's one delivered to her new address in Melbourne so she wont have to worry about travelling with it.

Hurray for modern technology!!

If you buy the right webcam it comes with an integral microphone, much better. (that is the main difference between the cheaper and more expensive ones, ours cost about 40 pounds I think)We live overseas, and we regularly make 30 second videos of ds and send them via email to grandoarents. Little videos like that are very easy to make and send, I think it is worth its weight in gold. Now we are just waiting for my mum and dad to get around to using the one we gave them for christmas, so they can send videos back....

Another nice idea is a magazine subscription from "home".

To Pie, WWW and Steppemum

just wanted to say thanks again for your idea of a webcam for a gift. We had the 'farewell' party for my sis and her family yesterday and they were thrilled with the webcam.
And my Mum is also over the moon to think that she'll still be able to 'see' her daughter and grandchildren.
thanks again.

Ahhh, how lovley. Just saw the thread today and thought oh I know a photo album of everyone, all her friends and family! how tight! A webcam is a fab idea and it's so nice that it's made parting a little easier knowing you'll still al 'see' each other.
