How shall I entertain my children today...?

With the summer holidays looming and stressed mothers appearing on threads everywhere, how about we suggest activities here to keep our little darlings entertained? Any that involve 15 minutes of "feet up" time for the mother are eslecially welcome!

Remember to include ages when making your suggestion.

Water Painting

Age : Pretty much any
Ingredients : One sunny patio, a bowl or water and a paint brush
Method : Hand ingredients to child and let them paint the patio with water. Sit back with an icy glass of Pimms and occasionally make appreciative comments. The pictures dry eventually, as does your child. Always watch your child if they're playing with water though.

on sunday i tried letting the children clean the toys in the garden i gave them 2 big sponges and 2 buckets of soapy water and they had a great time, the toys were spotless until they decided to have a sponge fight and everything including them got covered in mud but i didn`t mind, they really enjoyed it

We bought our 22 mth old a paddling pool £3 from Wilkinsons, and filled it with two packs of plastic balls from Tesco £12 in total, and he loves it! A little bit of outlay, but lots of playing and peace for me to flick through Heat and Closer magazine!

It means that when it is too warm outside, he can play indoors, and he often sits and reads and plays with his toys in it too!

I LOL at Enid's suggestion with Heat magazine and the CD! Fantastic!

We've already started a list like this one on the website I have set up. Go here for a long list of things to do with young children.

I am plucking up the courage to take my 4 1/2 and 2 1/2 year old boys to the cinema to see Piglet's Big Movie this afternoon - am I mad, taking them both on my own?! Anyone else been?

I've got one of those builders' trays for mixing cement in, about £14 from B&Q. We fill it with flour, pasta, icing sugar and water, lentils or whatever I can lay my hands on at the time. Just add teaset, old shampoo bottles, toy trucks or action figures and sos will play for ages . Best outside tho as it can get a bit messy to clear up sometimes.

Hilary took 3 year old to see Sinbad at the weekend - she loved it - took her to see Jungle Book 2 a while ago and she was as good as gold, did have partner with me but he always goes to sleep as soon as the lights go down so he may as well have been at home.

Tomorrow we are taking DD to Natural History Museum (she loves dinosaurs and thinks we should get some carrots to take for them!!!) and then if we have time may go to the London Aquarium or the Zoo (although Colchester is far better than London Zoo, it is just so far away!!)

Went to Bodium Castle last weekend and then on the Tenterton Steam Train, that was good too although was a bit hot and dusty on the train but castle was truely magical.

Try joining the National Trust - works out very reasonable for a family and gets you free entry into really great castles and parks. Think is about £5 per month.

We also go to Knowle Park in Sevenoaks quite a lot and get in free there as that is NT. They have the best cafe that sells super scrummy cakes.

Sorry forget that this is WWW and think you all live quite near me - which obviously you don't but there is a good book that I bought in Books etc called 1,001 days out with your kids that covers the whole of the country and has lots of great places in.

Sorry wrong end of the stick again - thought could include going out.

Tying children up and locking in the cupboard under the stairs always works in our house!! (Only joking!!)

DD loves blowing paint through straws so some liquid paint few straws and reel of IKEA paper and she is happy for ages. She also likes cleaning shoes (I never clean my shoes but use the excuse that they look crap to buy more) so not sure where she gets this from but give her a cloth and a brush and she sits there for ages.

Weeding is quite a good thing too that she likes - am gonna start paying her she does a better job than DP or Gardener!!
