Doe rabbit digging burrows!

I was wndering if anyone knows anything about this! I have 2 rabbits, a no-longer-functioning boy, and a fully functioning girl who is about 6 months old. They live in a hutch in our back garden, but until recently have spent most of the daylight hours hopping around our garden (which is well fenced/walled). Only problem being, that our girl bunny has taken to being a really busy bee recently and has dug herself a rather large burrow under the lawn. It took her ages, and she was really sweet and diligent at it - but obviously this is something i would like to discourage (for 2 reasons - firstly that she might dig under a fence and get lost, and secondly that if she is in her burrow then I can't put her in the hutch at night, and we have quite a big fox population around here.)

Would she be less inclined to dig a burrow if she were, um, no longer a fully functioning female? Does anyone know?

My female (also not neutered) also digs - my 'no longer functioning' male can't be bothered with the effort!! It is my understanding although I am no expert that in the wild it is the female that does all the burrowing and I would imagine that she is becoming mature and is preparing for babies even though she won't have any. My female has seasons, molests her male friend and does seem to show or hormones in what resembles PMT - usually takes it out on dh by attacking him O). She also nest builds. Not sure whether her digging would stop if she was neutered but it would probably improve. It may be worth putting some wire mesh at the bottom of your fences to try and stop her visiting your neighbours.

We had a rabbit who underwent a personality transformation a few months in - can't remember just when - and the vet recommended we had her spayed. Not only did she dig holes furiously, but she used to growl and snap: very scary! The poor old guinea pig was terrified of her!

Sure enough, after having all her bits removed, she returned to her previous docility.

Juno - did she stop digging holes, too?
