Being hard

"The Royal Marines are a maritime-focused, amphibious, highly specialised light infantry force of commandos capable of deploying at short notice in support of the United Kingdom Government's military and diplomatic objectives overseas and are optimised for operational situations requiring highly manoeuvreable forces. As the United Kingdom Armed Forces' specialists in cold weather warfare the Corps provide lead element expertise in the NATO Northern Flank and are optimised for high altitude operations, with jungle training still carried out when deployments allows."

Does that help?!

Blu · 26/04/2010 18:35

Thank you Drusilla - they do sound well 'ard.

But why can't they be a branch of the Navy or Army?

Are they like the SAS in a boat and a snowsuit?

i think officially they are a branch of the Navy?? Not sure, hmmm. What's a USP?!

Joolyjoolyjoo · 26/04/2010 18:39

Just asked DH and he says they are a branch of the RN.

He did give me a more long-winded explanation of it , but I think what it boils down to is that they are like specialised soldiers who travel by boat (Navy soldiers. Even though they wear green...)

Blu · 26/04/2010 18:40

USP = Unique selling Point!
They wear green? For some reason I imagned them in blue.

They all wear green half the time, even the RAF

Marines are are a highly mobile light infantry force under RN control. They operate from ships in amphibious assault craft or rubber boats and usually would be first into action, establishing a bridgehead, clearing ports of enemy troops, etc. Their nearest equivalent in the army is the Paratroop regiment that is also a highly mobile light infantry force.

The Marines are not special forces like the SAS. The naval equivalent of the SAS is the Special Boat Service (SBS).
