How long does your washing machine take? (40 degree)

Had an electric bill yesterday and it was extortionate. Started thinking about what we ran alot and what could be eating electric.

Washing machine is on an awful lot (possibly 2/3 times a day). Commented to my Mum that it takes over 2 hours for an economical 40 degree wash which apparently is very unusual! Am now thinking that perhaps something is wrong and that is using waaaay too much electric.

Ours is an 'a' economical machine (Ariston make), about 5 years old now.

How long does yours take on a 40 degree wash? Going to time it exactly this afternoon and then phone customer care on Monday!

Thanks

£375 per 1/4 is a lot I think.

wassy · 29/07/2005 12:46

Old-style boilers that have a hot water tank are expensive.

Power Showers are V. expensive.

wangle99 · 29/07/2005 15:43

don't have a power shower nor an old style boiler (our oil boiler is 2 years old).

Well, I just timed it and it was exactly 2.5 hours. Surely this cannot be right

The LONGEST cycle on my 5yr old Servis (prewash and then 60 degree wash) takes about 2 1/2hrs!

Distel · 29/07/2005 15:45

1 hour for 40 degrees
2 hours for 60 degrees

is this bill from a measured reading from your meter, or based on an estimate? Acouple of years ago we had v. high bills and when we queried it it was based on the previous occupants usage (heaven knows what they were doing) and when they came and took a reading we got a nice rebate

My bloody crap washing machine IS BROKEN since I contributed to this thread.

I am not getting it fixed AGAIN, especially when I NOW know that it takes bloody ages.

Is there a 'recommended washing machines' thread somewhere...??

PeachyClair · 29/07/2005 17:02

29 minutes, 44 minutes, or two settings at 1-2 hours.

I love my super high capacity machine

PeachyClair · 29/07/2005 17:03

There was a recommended washing machines recently, I tTHINK mine won but it may changed after I finished reading- mine is the Hoover Nextra

stacijc · 29/07/2005 17:07

mine used to take 2 hours ish but now takes forever, the drum is "tired" but we can't afford a new one just yet!!
economy wash still works, thats about an hour ish and i have to wash things by hand first if they are really dirty (baby + toddler = mess lol!)

wangle99 · 29/07/2005 18:11

chicagomum - the bill is based on readings taken by me so unfortunately it is right!

peachyclair - I think I want your washing machine! It sounds ace!

morningpaper - whoops sorry for jinxing your machine

Will see what the engineer has to say but to be honest we've had this repaired about once a year for the last five years and if it goes wrong again after tomorrow (when warranty is out) then a new one will have to be bought.

mines take 2 hours too

SofiaAmes · 29/07/2005 22:47

30 minutes. Get an american top loader with hot water (as well as cold) feed. It's also twice as big, so you are doing twice the amount of laundry in those 30 minutes.

wangle99 · 31/07/2005 09:28

Hmmm have just found washing machine manual and guess what that particular washing programme is meant to take 2.5 hours

BUT

it appears that although it is it's 'eco' wash which is why I always used it it is for heavy washing rather than light washing which the majority of ours is. Hmm will try the other 40 degree was that only takes 95 mins which is better!

Better cancel that engineer then...

Maybe the long wash is called the eco wash because it has long soaking periods, using relatively little electricity or fresh water, to let the detergent do its work.
