How about Olivia Newton John (Grease stylee with a cute outurned bob) .

Alice In Wonderland - she was English wasn't she?

Geri Halliwell in her famous Union Jack dress which you can pick up cheap in fancy dress stores.

Lulu

Florence Nightingale.

ZZZenAgain · 20/04/2010 20:37

Olivia Newton John is Australian, isn't she?

Boudecia - tartan shawl, blanket around her neck and a sword might do it

Queen Victoria - black and a long face

ZZZenAgain · 20/04/2010 20:38

Florence Nightingale would be good.

ZZZenAgain · 20/04/2010 20:39

black long-sleeved top, white apron, and a lamp

ZZZenAgain · 20/04/2010 20:40

although Boudecia not strictly English....

hmm who else is there?

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/04/2010 20:45

Queen Elizabeth I

Mary Shelley (of Frankenstein fame)

Jane Austen

Katherine Ferrars (Wicked Lady - Highway-woman)

Any of the famous suffragettes?

Boudicca in tartan

ON-J is Australian...

ZZZenAgain · 20/04/2010 20:46

Yes I was thinking of Emmeline Pankhurst or one of them but not sure what you'd wear to make it obvious - chains?!
Maybe a long dress with a band over one shoulder saying votes for women

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/04/2010 20:49

I think they wore a lot of purple and green like this

Chloe55 · 20/04/2010 20:57

I knew I would get one wrong

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/04/2010 21:04

I'm stunned that Boudicca/Boadicea isn't "English" but haven't looked it up yet. Did that mean because she was Celt or because she was foreign? I'm from East Anglia - Boudicca is big in those parts...

scurryfunge · 20/04/2010 21:08

Amy Whinehouse, Kerry Katona, Cheryl Cole? tee hee

BelleDameSansMerci · 20/04/2010 21:14

LOL scurry - how about Kate Moss?

scurryfunge · 20/04/2010 21:33

Ooops...I think I just killed that thread sorry

Goingspare · 20/04/2010 21:38

Margaret Thatcher

olijackmum · 21/04/2010 09:36

we decided last night on scary spice as she has a leopard skin dress from her dance show and i will get her an afro wig to go with it

OP posts:
BelleDameSansMerci · 21/04/2010 11:20

LOL!

SelkirkGrace · 21/04/2010 11:28

DS2's school has this. He wants to go as William Wallace because he's Scottish

BelleDameSansMerci · 21/04/2010 11:32

Brilliant!! That really made me laugh... I'm quite pleased they're actually doing something for St George's Day, tbh, but I love the idea of going as William Wallace - talk about a thorn in the side of the English! (And I am English before anyone gets huffy, etc).

ZZZenAgain · 21/04/2010 12:33

LOL at having a leopard skin dress and an afro wig handy...

Belle, Boudecia pre-English I suppose being a Celt, if they're being precise about it. British I suppose rther than specifically English but then we are all so mixed anyway, it's a bit ridiculous to distinguish that much these days.

I know dad was saying our family is Manx, English and even Scottish-Norwegian on his side Welsh, Irish, English on mum's side going back as far as he has been able to. I think most families in the UK are like that (if they don't have more exotic elements in the mix to really spice it up)

ZZZenAgain · 21/04/2010 12:34

we didn't come up with a whole lot of famous Englishwomen though, did we? That's a bit weak of us

Iklboo · 21/04/2010 12:38

All the famous Englsih women through history and she wants to go as Scary Spice - I love it!

Thought ON-J was born over here but emigrated to Oz when she was young? Like Kim Catrall (born in Liverpool, emigrated to Canada)

Iklboo · 21/04/2010 12:40

I'd want to go as Barbara Cartland

BelleDameSansMerci · 21/04/2010 15:37

No real idea re ON-J - just thought she was Aussie.

I was pretty horrified when I couldn't think of more "famous" or perhaps "illustrious" English women. Although, to be fair, I did steer clear of some of my lesser known historical heroines ie Mary Wollstonecroft, Elizabeth Fry, etc. Not very exciting costumes for a 10 year old!
