Brighton Mumsnetters - persuade me to move there!

Have just come back from a day promenading and eating over-priced (but delish) ice-cream in Brighton. It's years since I was last there and I had forgotten how much I like it. I can't move atm, but am thinking a few years ahead. When I've qualified as a midwife, ideally I'd like to set up as an independent. It strikes me that Brighton would be a lovely place to work in that capacity...

I'm just thinking aloud really, but as a single mother on a not-very-high wage, is this realistic? The reason I'm thinking this way is because I know I won't be able to stay in London - at least not the parts of London I'd like to stay in - but Brighton's not exactly the cheapest place in the world either, is it?

Soooo, I guess I'm looking for advice on possible areas to consider, with decent primaries, and generally encouraging 'I have a lovely life on the coast earning a pittance' type stories

Any takers? Go on, persuade me...

Blackman Street is in the North Laines (note cute spelling) which is a really groovy part of Brighton, not far from station etc. VERY central. Not sure of local school - maybe St Bartholomews? (I am in Hove, actually). Education Dept would tell you which school most likely. Exciting!

I'd be tempted if I was in your position. Sounds like a good idea to enquire with the council first. You must be very excited about it, have you mentioned it to K?

I had so many false hopes when I was trying to move, I decided to stop mentioning them to my kids until we knew for certain. Best of luck to you!

It is very expensive in Brighton and Hove to buy or rent. When we gave up our Hove pub and the accomodation that went with it we couldn't afford to rent in the area. However, we've moved just a little way out to Portslade/MileOak border and it is much cheaper and very pleasant. It is close enough for dd to still go to her same school in Hove and the buses to Brighton are frequent so it's not much of a hardship. Going to the seafront is not difficult, in fact we were on the pier on Sunday! Although we don't have the constant 'buzz' of being in the city centre we have got a three bedroom house with a garden for the same price as a two bedroom flat in town so it's worth it to us.

Agree to avoid Whitehawk and Moulscombe at all costs!

Blackman Street is very close to the railway station which may be useful to you or not! Easy reach of shops, terrible parking, that's all I know sorry.

I lived in Brighton for 2 years (college) - I loved it - sigh
