Lego storage issues

Okay, so I have no idea where to put this message, which is ironic considering what i'm asking of you lovely people.

My DS 4 was given an enormous bucket of (secondhand-ish, maybe third or forth hand) lego by his grandad and while we love that our boy enjoys it so much the bucket is gigantic (i could seriously fit DS and a friend in it and he's a tall child) and bucket shaped so doesn't really fit anywhere. We live in a bijou residence (see small terraced house) and my husband is a bit OCD (not a bad thing) so it's really a place for everything and everything in it's place situation here - we've had to move hall furniture to fit it in (and the furniture was quite precisely planned for that space).

We have toyed with putting it in his room but that too was planned and decorated/furnished finitely and giant blue buckets didn't figure in those plans! Not to mention that should the pieces not be tidied away (heaven forfend!!!) one or all of us will suffer irreparable podiatric damage.

Should I give in to DH and let him bin it or do any of you know of a really good way to store it? Maybe something right angles and segmented drawers (DH's dream for LEGO)

Thank you

x

Our lego (and we have a lot of it as I have 2 DS aged 5 and 7 who are lego obsessed) lives in a series of stackable plastic boxes with lids. Occasional shouting on my part that any lego found on the floor will be sucked up by the hoover encourages them to keep it in the boxes...

LostArtOfKeepingASecret · 11/04/2010 19:26

Are you really considering throwing out lego! You know that's against the law!

We have ours in storage boxes that can slide under beds. Although, tbh, they are always cluttering up my sittingroom out and never tidied away.

Thanks for that.

I know, i can't bear the idea of binning it.

we have storage boxes for all his other little toys under his bed but the lids don't snap shut - i forsee spillage issues!!

god if you're going to get rid of it don't bin it - stick it on ebay - some of it goes for an absolute fortune on there!

Ah yes Really Useful boxes are brilliant (I got mine in Staples). There are really small ones too so you can separate out tiny bits if you want to. Plus my DC can get the lid off and on the box themselves which is always a bonus.

Thank you all, that's great.

Reality - i anticipate with a readied binbag the state of his room as he gets older!!! it's not perfect now, but have the wonder that is the den bed (what you can't see can't bother you!)

Great advise, have been on really useful boxes site (thanks zapostrophe) they look fab.

Will see what DH thinks.

thanks very muchly.

Storage boxes. They can look very neat!

Also, it is a child's room! And as such it is supposed to look like it IMO.

My DSs room is decorated lovely, but also I allow it to be his room. After all, it is! I don't want it to just be somewhere he sleeps. Therefore, if his toys are not immaculately kept, so what!

keep it in a massive blanket then it's easy to pack again

TiggyD · 11/04/2010 22:14

Can't you make a box out of it to put itself in it?

Jamieandhismagictorch · 14/04/2010 22:04

We have lots of Lego

We have put it all in a whole storage unit - wooden with plastic slidy boxes/drawers, from Ikea.

Wow - my first time on Other Subjects
