Do you walk the school run?

Looks like i'll be losing my car in 3 weeks and will be walking to and from school with ds (5) and dd (1) i the buggy. It's 2.9 miles there so will be walking 5.8 miles per day in all weather!

How far do you walk doing the school run and do you do it in all weather? How long does it take?

Actually it's 8.4 miles every day forgot about coming home

Is a bike with child seats or trailer a possibility?

Don't think I have a choice unless I can find £800 for car insurance, and there's no way i'm moving DS to our local school.

Seriously think i'd keel over if I tried to bike it!!

shalaa, I think it will be beyond hard, I really struggled when I was doing it 3 times a day, there and back. I was just so tired(that was just under 6 miles in total), I took them in the morning, dropped dd at school, ds at nursery, then went back to get ds from nursery, then went back to get dd from school, now I only do it twice a day it is still tiring - have you walked it before to see how long it takes? On bad days, in the snow and rain and gale force winds it can take twice as long to walk back, especially with the dc dragging their heels.

Get children on some kind of wheels/bike buggy/scooter to make it a bit easier. Invest in good waterproofs all round, didriksons are good - something like this. I had these for both dd and ds and they have been brilliant. I would seriously consider a bike and buggy, dc will love it and it will make your journey a third of the walking time.

shalaa - think positively, at least you won't have to go to the gym... you will burn lots of cals doing that walk every day. It's a long way for your DS to walk... take food and drink provisions.

My school run is 500 metres each way (we have measured it using GPS - so not completely accurate but quite close)... so 2km a day.

£800 is bloody expensive

Have you shopped around? We have had ours lowered in the past just by ringing up insurer and saying "That's too expensive, can you do any better?"
Paying by direct debit might be possible.

Ours is around €500, that does include a good no-claims bonus but I thought insurance was cheaper in UK

shalaa · 01/04/2010 16:41

Sazisi tell me about it, our insurance was £223 last year! Have got it down to £603 which we are going for, can't do all that walking even if it means thinner thighs

Insurance has gone up as I was hit by an uninsured driver last year, also we don't have a driveway. Bloody money

thanks for all your suggestions though!

Not sure how far it is but it takes around 15 mins and yes, we do it in all weathers. Just make sure you've got some good wellies and waterproofs.

Is there a school any nearer?

ShadeofViolet · 01/04/2010 16:55

We walk. Its just under two miles - not too bad on the way there as its downhill, but walking back is a killer. I always take hi a juice carton and a banana after school.

Dont forget though, you will be walking the journey 4 times a day.

If it's called the school run, then you should run it.
