Needed: 'Cheap as chips' but lovely 3 day honeymoon

We're getting married next month and have postponed the idea of a flashy honeymoon due to potentially imminent financial crisis. How responsible I hear you cry! Only kids can do that to you.

But,...... reckon we could scrape a couple of nights somewhere in the UK, preferable south of England preferably we are near M4 and dp drives thousands of miles weekly so would appreciate a shortish drive.

anyone recommend somewhere lovely but quite erm, inexpensive. (bouncy beds too obviously )

could someone suggest somewhere for me - same criteria (cheap but nice) but preferably other end of country. We are in the north east.

WideWebWitch · 18/07/2005 18:50

Pecka, I don't know the name of a single town or city in the North West (is Newcastle one?), give me some ideas and I'll look!

fairyfly · 18/07/2005 18:54

Someone once posted this and i have wanted to go ever since

WideWebWitch · 18/07/2005 18:55

What's your budget Pecka?

peckarollover · 18/07/2005 19:06

Im in Newcastle, thats in the north east

Budget ermmmmm probably about 300 quid

tamum · 18/07/2005 19:07

Pecka, if you can go up to £300 for 2 nights then you could think about Malmaison in Edinburgh . Not exactly cheap as chips mind, and maybe you'd rather be out of a city?

WideWebWitch · 18/07/2005 19:09

Ooh, this looks nice gretstreethotel

WideWebWitch · 18/07/2005 19:10

Oh, it's next to the airport, maybe not!

Fio2 · 18/07/2005 19:13

oNE OF THE MOST ROMANTIC PLACES I have ever been is camping in Llangollen (with kids) we were right in the valley and it was just so so beautiful. i have never forgotten it

Puff · 18/07/2005 19:19

Someone on here recommended this place The Pool Room looks good.

peckarollover · 18/07/2005 20:16

www that is a lovely hotel i would rather go away somewhere though. Its not close to the airport I live 0.5 mile from airport that place is about 4 miles away

CountessDracula · 18/07/2005 20:24

Hey Flum how about the Fort William sleeper, I have always thought that would be so romantic! Bet you could get it quite cheapo if you booked htis far in advance and I believe there are some nice reasonable places to stay a night or so up there

crunchie · 18/07/2005 21:34

Eurostar are doing free upgrades to first class, so Paris is not out of the price range.

Flum · 18/07/2005 22:46

My god. you lot are better than my real mates. so thoughtful. Thank you.

Dp is v. good at haggling but thank you. he is in charge of honey moon!

Where is Fort William? Not Scotland (trying to avoid Scotland as I have a life as a Salmon fishing widow involving weekends in Scotland ahead of me)

Wedding is in Henley on Thames.

Pecca, leaving organising the honeymoon a bit late aren't you love. The Ednam House hotel in Kelso in the Borders on the Tweed is gorgeous. Real shabby chic, reminds you of days gone by big time. Not sure of prices but food is lovely and ambience also lovely.

flum AHEM

bossykate · 18/07/2005 23:05

i think this looks nice - not cheap as chips though White House Brighton

i found a really nice looking place in St Ives the other day, if you want to go as far as that.

Ellbell · 19/07/2005 00:21

How about here ?

Haven't been to the hotel, but lovely part of the world. When we used to live in Reading we used to sometimes go down to Studland for the day, so not too far.

And your dh might be flattered by the notion that you want to take him to Studland...!

peckarollover · 19/07/2005 07:18

Flum, Ive already had my "honeymoon" - a week in majorca with the kids 3 weeks ago but I want a little break that is just me and DP to help deal with some of this post wedding anti climax
