TOTNES area which VILLAGE, which PRIMARY SCH?

hi, we have (almost) decided to make the huge decision of moving to the totnes area. i would be really delighted to hear from any Mners with knowledge of local schools and family friendly local villages. (we are not lentil weavers as such but are from brighton so feel at home with the totnes vibe!)to be honest, its the idea of a semi rural location and the diversity of the landscape in the area that appeals, rather than the alternative vibe. however, my mum loves crystals and other pointless things of that nature, and will be moving close by. so, totnes it is .

i need to try to short list local schools with a view to sending my 5 and 8 yo dds to one of them. we are looking for a good local primary in a semi rural area, within 3 miles or so of totnes. we thought dartington might be a good bet as it seems to serve a larger area than most village schools.

we will be renting when we first move down, but looking to buy soon after. it would therefore not make sense to enroll the dds's at a tiny school close to where we rent, as they may then have to move again.

tia

ps sorry to anyone who saw my duplicate thread in 'education' but i decided i needed a new thread title with a different ephasis, as my last thread focussed on getting a teaching job.

don't EVER say pointless things and crystals in the same sentence on Totnes high Street, it's a long way down to the bottom !

Hi,

I am not sure if you can just pick and choose what school you want the dc's to be enrolled in? Not sure if it works like that, ie whereby you have to be in the 'area' or radius anyhow? iyswim.

Dartington school is prob very busy, and popular.

Villages sometimes are miles apart, and tbh you will want, in the end to send you kids to the one nearest your home/community.

If you are moving down here, then thinking of work/income is paramount I'd say. Have done it myself, and seen lots come down too.

pirate, hi.

thanks for your post. providing a school has places, and you are moving into the area you can pretty much choose which school you like (have talked to admissions).

we will be renting to begin with, and as dartington do have a few places, we could maybe enroll them there and rent close by. however, once we buy, we may not be so close to the school, so choosing a larger primary seems to make sense.

i am a primary school teacher, and will take a job within a 30- 40min drive. i am unlikely to find work before we go, and may have to resort to doing supply. so you it makes sense for us to think about schools first.

I live about 12 miles south of totnes in K.

I returned here after doing the whole london thing. That was about 8 yrs ago. I was brought up here for a while.

Now getting tad fed up tbh!!!

harbarton ford used to have a good name and the seconday school used to have a good name but moved to oz last year and haven't lived near totnes for many years but my paents still live in denbury. it's more than 3 miles to denbury but its a lovely little village and very traditional. think its between 5 and 10 miles.

piratecat · 28/02/2010 09:38

it's just that bit closer to beaches, and the local primary is v laid back, friendly and great. As are all the village schools round here. The secondary school is outstanding.

noonar · 28/02/2010 09:48

thanks guys.

we've just got back from holiday down there and totally love the area. agree about proximity to beaches further south, but we would get somewhere bigger with land for less money around totnes- i think... also, mum is following us down and helping with childcare. she is very 'totnes' and doesnt drive...

lots of property for sale at harberton/ ford. was wondering if there was a catch as it seems cheap there!

which secondaries are good other than kevics/ grammars?
