I'm trying to learn BSL in my free time and cannot commit to classes with my adult ed centre (unfortunately), so I was wondering if anybody knew of any resources I could use to teach myself along with websites that I could use to see the signing so that I can see how the signs are done.

I have a BSL dictionary and am slowly learning bits of makaton at a nursery I work at and using my dictionary to pick out random words. I also understand the 'sentence structure' of signing as I have has a few lessons but now I'd like to pick up more and become proficient in it. I also intend to take classes again once I'm able to commit, but as I'll be travelling soon I can't for a few years I'm also planning on trying to find a language partner who I'll be able to sign with over webcam should my internet connection abroad be good

Thanks in advance

The one and only 'linguistics of british sign language' book is good.
Can't recall websites offhand - try www.livejournal.com/communities/bsl_qna .

Its very hard to learn BSL from books.

Most of the organisations for Deaf people have good video clips on them now. Its worth checking out RNID etc and looking at all the links pages to find smaller groups.

There are some brilliant sites where whole children's books are signed. I think one is called something like mybslbookscom or similar.

If you cannot commit to a long course of lessons it may be worth checking out intensive courses and signing weekends. See if your local Deaf club has nights for hearing BSL students.

Sorry to be a bit vague but I am a bit out of the loop .

Thanks! I'll look into the deaf club and see if there's anything in the next 6 weeks and try find that bsl book and some more sites

That LJ didn't work, but there is another lj here so I'm going to read through that at some point

Try the Signature website - www.signature.org.uk - their support homework is excellent and has really upped my comprehension. k.
