I had a very very bad day at work today!

They changed our email Lotus notes over to an internet based platform, and there is a web filter on it which means I can't access Mumsnet anymore

It does say that if I need it for business purposes they will allow me access to it.

Anyone got any ideas why a chartered accountant in practice would need access to mumsnet for business purposes???????

ah soapbox you know I almost envy you - to have temptation taken away like that. What do they consider "business purposes"? I find the weekday mornings especially a kind of instant route to informed resources on all kind of things - effect of pooling brainpower - and presumably they let you have boring old search engines which don't do the job nearly as well.

Could they also allow general access (not for "business purposes") for say certain no. of hours a week?

soapbox · 15/07/2005 13:00

Binkie - on holiday today so able to get on[bliss]

I just don't have the bottle to start teh conversation!

I'm up for partnership this year as well and don't want to rock the boad IYSWIM.

Ifa dn when I get past that hurdle then I'll be able to make effective use of teh heirarchy to get access

Ideally I think it would be good to learn to live without it - but as you all know that is damned hard!

crikey soapbox, that's all a bit grim isn't it. Like Moo's thinking re: mums & money, she's one smart cookie, they couldn't possibly argue with that.

LOL at browsing MN using your blackberry. I have this mental image of you furtively tapping away with it under your desk

binkie · 15/07/2005 13:08

oh, partnership soapbox, fingers very crossed for you. When will you hear?

katierocket · 15/07/2005 13:09

partnership schmartnership. what about mumsnet?!

emmatmg · 15/07/2005 13:12

God, I'm sooo glad I don't work in an office with internet access. I would never get anything done.

Seriously, Soapbox and others with MN at work HOW do you do it???

If I was wearing a hat I'd be taking it off to you all now

katierocket · 15/07/2005 13:17

soapbox, soapbox

Look the perfect reason
here

SoftFroggie · 15/07/2005 15:20

Do you have to ask for permission for each and every website you use?
I had a fairly general issue about not being able to predict which websites I need in order for them to be unblocked in time to use them, and got the filter removed completely. I mean, with all our training and professionalism, they shouldn't feel the need to chaperone our internet useage .
Not that I would ever use MN at work (at home at the mo).

Soapbox, how for you.
Cmon, you need it to network to campaign to get the local authority to kick its Childrens Information Service into touch! Thereby raising the profile of your firm as a family-friendly employer working with the CoL...

spidermama · 15/07/2005 21:47

Commiserations soapbox. I'd be quite tense if I were banned from daylight mn-ing.

I hope you're able to throw yourself into your account chartering (whatever that may be).

WideWebWitch · 15/07/2005 22:14

Cor, that's a bit of a bugger that soapbox. Can't you say 'there's a site with a lot of City based people and some interesting stats and I need access to it, thanks' ? Hmm but it's called mumsnet, that's a pita, yes, I think you have to get tech to change the name to www.charteredaccountantsandstats.com or something. Sympathy!

WideWebWitch · 15/07/2005 22:17

I'm racking my brains for a reason. I am usually the woman who can justify anything!

skerriesmum · 15/07/2005 22:58

My dh and I work at the same company and he had to block mn at work because I was wasting too much time!

skerriesmum · 15/07/2005 22:59

He's a programmer, I'm not, so I can't figure out how to get it back. Which is lucky!

chipmonkey · 16/07/2005 00:03

Mean of your dh, skerriesmum, amounts to mental cruelty I would think!

WideWebWitch · 16/07/2005 18:28

I'd think desertion a reasonable response to that skerriesmum!

WideWebWitch · 16/07/2005 18:32

I've got it Soapbox! You need to be able to access various discount codes which you get from clicking through to retail site from this site so that you can do essential shopping online at lunchtime, thereby freeing you up to spend more time at work, rather than having to go out shopping or having to leave the premises at lunchtime. These sites and codes save you time and money = you are a happier and more productive employee with more time to devote to . It's a weak case I know but I think I'd have a crack at it!

bossykate · 16/07/2005 18:34

try the networking/practice development angle. what a bummer. i live in fear of something like this happening!

jampots · 16/07/2005 18:46

how about we all email you threads? You specify the topics!

soapbox · 17/07/2005 21:36

I like the discount idea WWW

BK - I think the biggest impact has been on my team who are now being pushed and prodded in a way they never thought possible

Skerries - I strongly suspect that DH will try something like that on our home computer now that I am desparate to catch up on a whole days postings during the evening!

OP posts:
soapbox · 17/07/2005 21:37

Jampots - I may have to resort to that, but lets see if I can manage over the next few weeks - at least until we go on holiday!
