what do you think of pregnant women drinking?

Just wondering, as we went out for a sunday roast this weekend, and I had a pint of lager shandy (it was a really hot day and it was lovely out in the pub garden)
I have generally been having a shandy or a white wine spritzer almost every weekend since I found out I was pregnant, and do not ssee the harm in it myself,
I did however get a lot of disgusted stares from various women sitting near us.
i am very proud that i stopped smoking the day I took the test, and though it has been hell i have not succumbed since, even though dp is still smoking as normal so the temptation is always there
I do not see the problem in treating myself to an occasional drink, and don't believe I should be wrapped up in cotton wool for the whole 9 months.
what are your thoughts?

dyzzidi, (nice name btw), that's very nicely put and understandable.

It's JoBrowns comment about " shouldn't be allowed to have kids......bla de bla " that irritates me.
Holier than thou indeed! I'm not even slighty angry though as it's pathetic!

Caligula · 13/07/2005 10:03

JoBrown's a loon if she genuinely thinks that.

Pinotmum · 13/07/2005 10:08

I drank wine when pregnant with both children in moderation and champagne on my wedding day. Both my children are fine. I do hate these "perfect" types who insist we all do it THEIR way otherwise we're rubbish parents. JoBrown would drive me to drink I think.

bakedpotato · 13/07/2005 10:17

I like it. As long as they're not lying in the gutter with spilt Thunderbird on their bumps.

Fennel · 13/07/2005 10:20

I do hope that people who want to follow all the guidelines to the letter remember that the latest WHO recommendations are that breastfeeding is beneficial up to the age of 8 years. personally I think anyone who stops before that doesn't deserve to have a child....

Hey guys, I think y'all should go easy on Jo. She's only just saying what she feels. Don't you guys think it is a liittle unfair to come down so hard on someone just because they feel really strongly about an issue?

expatinscotland · 13/07/2005 12:57

I enjoy the odd glass of wine - red or white at 17 weeks along now, especially if I feel anxious.

What I find funny about the 'drink is the devil' whilst pregnant attitude in America the Police State is that they eat peanut butter like it's going out of production tomorrow and no one so much as bats an eyelid.

But take a sip of alcohol and you've condemned your child to a lifetime of FAS.

Where's my eye-rolling icon?

Thank you, aloha, for your comments. I was my own, sensible woman before I got pregnant and being with child hasn't changed that - nor has being a mother.

Angeliz · 13/07/2005 13:07

Norash i don't think it's unfair at all cosidering her comments. You make a comment like that you are bound to get a reaction. I actually think we've been restrained, could have been very insulting ;like her!

Caligula · 13/07/2005 13:13

Quite. JoBrown has said that a large number of women in the western world should not be allowed to have children. Quite an inflammatory statement. As well as bonkers.

Bugsy2 · 13/07/2005 13:14

Guidelines are issued to guide people (unsurprisingly). They are not legally binding or necessarily based on the most up to date information.
The use of common sense is a great bonus as a parent . Getting drunk gives you an evil hangover because you have poisoned your body, therefore it is clearly going to be very bad for anyone else inside your body too! Having a shandy or the odd glass here & there is probably very enjoyable and relaxing. The body will release endorphins, blood pressure go down and sense of well-being increase. Common sense would suggest that this is a good thing!

aloha · 13/07/2005 13:15

People who are sanctimonious, judgemental hags don't deserve children IMO. Just my opinion of course.

monkeytrousers · 13/07/2005 13:29

I actually thought that wine had never tasted better when I was pregnant. it's never tasted the same since either.

hercules · 13/07/2005 13:30

I agree again with aloha. I also drank a lot of diet coke whilst pregnant and dont feel a bit guilty.

sansouci · 13/07/2005 13:32

My thoughts are that a. the odd shandy or small glass of wine shouldn't cause a problem (it didn't for me but...), b. never smoke, c. ignore people who are rude enough to stare at you.

there is the fact that alcohol passes through the umbilical cord so be very, very careful!

hercules · 13/07/2005 13:34

I hate seeing women smoking whist pregnant though.

sansouci · 13/07/2005 13:43

have just skimmed through rest of thread (long!) to find the infamous Jo's post.

sansouci · 13/07/2005 13:44

hmmm. i love it when a controversial topic comes up. makes for interesting reading.

babyonboard · 13/07/2005 14:13

lmao ' alohas comment...
some of you are saying its not fair to attack jo for expressing her opinion..isn't that precisely what she is doing to those of us that she has insulted? you give what you get and all..
really wish I was brave enough to have a go at the next stranger that offers their pearls of wisdom to me while i'm out and about..

My GP just prescribed me anti-anxiety tablets. Think I'll try wine first .

triceratops · 13/07/2005 15:01

My current bean definately wriggles more when I have had a glass of wine so I can't pretend that it has no effect. On the other hand I really couldn't get through the week without the promise of that one (very small) cold white wine at the end of the week. I don't think that a couple of units will cause any noticable harm.

I didn't drink at all last time I was pregnant because I didn't fancy it and I was being super good - I gave up caffeine and peanuts too - but this time I am really craving all things boozey. I could really do with a nice cool jug of pimms now......

monkeytrousers · 13/07/2005 15:12

Mmmmmmm! Can I join you?

babyonboard · 13/07/2005 15:17

Me too...it was torture going out for dinner last night when dp drank a bottle and half of my favourite wine...I sttuck to mineral water..maybe this thread got me feeling guilty..he he
but i would say it's now probably pimms o clock..lots of ice in mine please! he he

I think they should be shot

MINNIE1 · 13/07/2005 16:14

Going to a wedding this wkend and i hope to have red wine. I have been Vgood throughout no drinking at all and gave up smoking 7 months ago.. Super star me..

My sister does have a glass of wine and she is on her 4th.

I dont think its a problem to have a few. You have a shandy for all the beer thats in it and enjoy.
