Are suntan lotion wipes any good?

The reason I ask is, because of all the hot weather at the mo, I am having to put sunscreen on ds before he goes to school. And, as I am sure you can appreciate, I can do without yet another task to perform before getting him out the door to school. My sister suggested that for speed I might use these new fangled wipes but do they have a sufficient amount on them to protect him or is it just a gimmick? Any thoughts?

I used to find wipes good for topping up during the day but dd's excema is burning with them so I've stopped.

Lots of people recommend P20, which is a liquid you apply first thing in the morning and lasts all day with factor 20 protection, it needs to be applied 90 mins before sun exposure.

The Aussie mumsnetters recommend Sunsense, anyone any idea where to buy it in the UK ?

mammya · 16/06/2003 22:16

I use P20 for my dd and myself (I burn easily, she doesn't) but the problem is that 90min wait. So if we have to go out straight away I use conventional sunscreens, I like Johnson's Baby Moisturising sunscreen (factor 40) and then wipes to top up. The wipes are quite good actually, one is enough to do my dd's face, neck and arms.

The sunnies do have quite a lot of cream on them, loads of my friend use them. I like the mothercare rollerball sun cream which works really well and is no mess.

suedonim · 17/06/2003 03:36

Mammya, I use P20, and have got into the habit of slapping it on my dd as she gets dressed in the morning. That way, it's 'activated' by the time we are ready to go out and the sun is strong enough to burn. HTH

We used the pampers sunnies wipes when on holiday in aus... lots of coverage and very easy to put on - especially with a wriggly baby.

Sunsense can be bought online www.sunsense.co.uk

I use the Sunnies wipes - they do seem to get quite a bit on the child. DD has tanned but not burned. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the messages everyone. Sorry I took so long to get back, but my broadband has been down all day, and I have just managed to get back on. Well, from your responses I think I will give them a go. Ta.

We use Sunnies too and think they are great. It is a nightmare trying to get normal sun lotion on DD (14 months) and these make it so much easier. They are a much more expensive method I think though. Not sure what to do when I go to Italy in August yet - the wipes may work out a bit dear. Any ideas?

Redwood · 19/06/2003 09:53

Hi all,

I'm using Sunnies here and will on hols in Italy and France. They are a bit more expensive but easier to get the right coverage which has to be the most important thing.

I didi buy some on Monday in Mothercare who are were selling them 'buy one get second half price'

eidsvold · 19/06/2003 14:38

we bought dd a 100%spf shirt ( whilst in aus) and put that on with her swim nappies then only had to do her legs and a little bit of her arms, legionaires cap - off she went. I think you can get those shirts/suits online claire not sure....Helped the wipes go further.

wickedstepmother · 19/06/2003 14:57

Another 'YES' vote here for Sunnies from a mum of a very fair skinned red haired DD.

Claireandrich · 19/06/2003 20:22

Eidsvold - I have one of them Uv suits and hats being sent over from Oz for DD. My BIL is over there now for the next year stayig with his girlfriend so he is going to get us a really good quality one and post it to us. Apparantly they are much cheaper too, and many are done in collaboration with the Australian cancer charities. Hopefully he will do us right. I guess I will then only have to worry about a much smaller area of body to deal with - I think the Sunnies may be coming with us. I find them so much easier.

eidsvold · 20/06/2003 07:52

they are much cheaper - our shirt cost AU$21 which worked out somthing silly and they are so great ... lots of kids use them in aus - they are the thing to have. My friends back home swear by them. We were determined to get one for dd as soon as we got to the beach for our holiday. As they are stretchy you also get a lot more wear out of them. Dd will take ages to grow out of hers.

fidget · 20/06/2003 21:32

I know this might be regional but mothercare have got a buy one get one free offer on Sunnies!

wickedstepmother · 22/06/2003 18:37

I've also got one of those UV tent things, they are massive when open but fold up into a clever little bag. I got mine for £19.99 from Vertbaudet. It's great for putting out in the back garden for DD to play in on these balmy summer days . Though DD started crawling properly today so getting her to stay in the tent may be a problem now....

codswallop · 22/06/2003 18:44

\princess pea head has a nice line in those except hers are virtual. She offers to flog you one that doesnt exist

I enjoy teasing her about this...

princesspeahead · 23/06/2003 11:06

har de har de har.
just noticed this! It DOES exist, I just can't find it! probably very kindly lent it to someone else, and can't remember. what a very nice person I am...!

MamaHuston · 04/11/2006 00:50

Hi there, I bought a long sleeved UV protective swimwear shirt on the net from New Zealand. It wasn't cheap but is really cute and good quality so will last well. I find that the UV suits not only protect from the sun and avoid the risk of creams reacting, it helps keep sand out too if you are at the beach! The shirt was from \link{http://www.littleredfish.com\UV swimwear online
