Looks like himself is off to South Africa for three weeks beginning of February. Is there anything he should know?
Whats the best thing to bring back for the kids?

Most importantly are there any injections he should have (fingers crossed they will go in the bum)?

And how long is the flight?

Thank you.

Flights are usually overnight so leave between 6 and 8 pm UK time and get into SA first thing in the morning.

Shouldn't need any jabs.

Where is he going? Work or pleasure?

MrsJohnDeere · 20/01/2010 18:01

Dh has just come back from SA.

Flight 10 hours to Cape Town, 11 back from J'Burg, iirc.

Mine brought back t-shirts for the dcs (that they didn't really need). Not great for shopping, I'm told. Lots of things (books, toys) are much more £££ than they would be here.

No jabs needed.

If he's hiring a car tell him to get something 4wd (roads are awful) and to watch out for men with speed cameras hiding behind bushes.

He is off to Cape Town and Johannasburg (sp) and is working all the time he is there as he wants to get home as soon as possible. The shopping is goo as he hates shopping anyway but is likely to buy things for stray children while he is there. He had a following of small Cambodian children the last time he did one of these jaunts. That time he came back with the most delicate carved soap flowers whiich the children gave him as a thank you.

Any idea what is good to eat out there and what to avoid?

He could get you a diamond cheaper out there

I remember markets and carved soap stone animals so maybe he could pick up something indigenous to SA?

Also beaded 'goods' like purses and book marks spring to mind.

He should buy wine (but maybe not for the kids!). South African wine is great and good value.

He will eat well. Food is almost always great and v cheap. Difficult to go wrong on that front imo.

MrsJohnDeere · 21/01/2010 16:27

Oh yes, dh brought back some very nice wine on his last trip. Far nicer than the South African stuff we've had from supermarkets here.

If you want restaurant recommendations I can ask dh tonight.

He said the restuarants were good for meat (huge steaks etc), less good for vegetables (regarded very much as an optional or unnecessary extra). But he is a real food ponce and very hard to please with food.

babyicebean · 21/01/2010 21:09

Himself will eat pretty much anything as long as it isn't cooked by his mother. He has eaten weird thing in Cambodia so he'll be happy.

Anything he should avoid?

He ought to think about having Hepatitis A vaccine - it's given in the arm and it's best to have it about 3 weeks before travel so he needs to get it soon if he's having it.

I think the nurse must have been having a bad day as she seemed to give him loads of injections.

Hep A
Tetnus
are the ones I remember him muttering about.
