I do

As long as the spuds aren't green they're ok.

Toothache · 05/07/2005 16:14

I do it all the time! Don't see why not.... unless they have gone all soft and yucky. IME the potatoes I buy get shoots just 3 days after I buy them!!

BadHair · 05/07/2005 16:15

I have a feeling that it's not a good idea, but I regularly do and we've not been poisoned yet. you just cut the shoots off and peel as normal.
I've even been known to use slightly green spuds, which is definitely not a good idea. Still not been poorly yet though.

Kayleigh · 05/07/2005 16:15

I do too. Just rub the shoots off with my thumb.

Janh · 05/07/2005 16:16

They shoot almost as soon as you get them home atm, it's the time of year - all the old potatoes are very very old. We'll get new season maincrop soon and they will be OK.

pleaserewind · 05/07/2005 16:18

good, that'll do, won't have to disapoint dp now

I would be cautious if you're pregnant or could be pregnant - I can't remember why, but pregnant people aren't supposed to eat green bits on potatoes and personally I avoided sprouting ones too. But then I am very cautious.

babyonboard · 12/07/2005 15:27

no! you definitly shouldn't, When potatoes are green and sprouting they contain high amounts of the poison solanine. it is generally destroyed by cooking, but better safe than sorry methinks

Fran1 · 12/07/2005 15:33

I use them, and have been known to chop green ends off and eat the rest!

Toothache · 12/07/2005 15:34

babyonboard - What about ones that aren't green, but are sprouting??

compo · 12/07/2005 15:35

I use them do and have never experienced poisoning of any sort

lemonice · 12/07/2005 15:36

I use them ..what does solanine do and who to??

swiperfox · 12/07/2005 15:37

We had some yesterday and i'm just cooking some more - we're all ok! (well, that could be debatable )

babyonboard · 12/07/2005 15:44

I think it is the greenness that indicates the toxins..so if you slice it open and its allwhite then you are safe..
guess its a matter of whether you are overly causious, but it can cause severe stomach poisining..which can't be pleasant!
i'm personally being really anal about such things at the moment, being pregnant.

Ameriscot2005 · 12/07/2005 15:48

I try not to - but do generally end up cutting a lot of sprouts off. So far, so good.

lou33 · 12/07/2005 16:30

they get eaten in thsi house, unless they are spongy as well. I just cut the shoots and green skin off
