Pleeeeaaase help, I need some good ideas that are relatively easy to make a fancy dress outfit/theme for my 2.10 month old dd(it's her first time in the village gala day).DD walks with the use of a rollator walking frame(she has CP)so even ideas to jazz it up please....
Thanks everyone
and I'm sure dd will be thanking you in years to come when the pictures are being shown around!!

I think that maybe your DD is too young for Cat in the Hat (?) -but I've done the costume and it was pretty easy and also the Cat has a Tidying Up Machine which perhaps the frame could be decorated as?

Costume mainly consisted of furry tail - length of fur trim bought offf market for about 60p, and big hat made of cardboard (market £1) covered in sections of red and white felt (cheap from local haberdashers) and a red bow tie.

Not very girly I suppose - but it looked great (biased Mum )

Thinking back to my first fancy dress costume here, what about Little Bo Peep? Frilly dress of some description, ideally a poke bonnet-type hat, which should be reasonably easy to make, and a crook. This could be attached to the walking frame, along with some small toy sheep. The Cat in the Hat sounds really good, too!

My sister once won a fancy dress comp dressed as wee willy winky. You just need a nightie / big baggy stripey dress that you make, a candlestick (which you could attach to the frame) and then make a sleeping cap out of two triangles of old material. Simple!

Thanks for the ideas so far everyone....any more this morning???
I will give DD the choice this afternoon then get the stuff together tonight and then guess what I'm doing on my day off tomorrow!!!!!

Hi Chatee, I had to work quick on this one once. Son was invited to fancy dress on morning of party. I could not go and buy anything so I thought PIRATE. I cut up some jeans and a t.shirt. Then an old old black sheet I cut a square out to use as a bandana. Made a skull and crossbones pattern on bandana with glue and then poured silver glitter on it.Put fake earring in ear as last touch. He did look very good for the so little time I had to do it in.

If you feel this is a good idea you could stick a parrot on her walking frame.
Other ideas
fairy princess
a dice (if her walking frame allows the room) paint a box white and cover with dots same as a dice, with her wearing white tights. Make an opening for her head and arms in box. (she seems a bit young for this I must admit)
halloween character
hawaii style with a garland covering her walking frame.
Sorry for the rant, just trying to think of suggestions for your dd. Hope she enjoys her day

What about moaning myrtle from the harry potter books? She would be relatively easy to do.

Our playgroup is doing 101 dalmations in the village fete this year - dead easy and no age limit. old white t-shirt with black splodges either painted or sewn on, same idea for trousers (or if youve only got black trousers do it white on black), black face paint for the nose, some floppy ears on a head band and if your feeling really adventurous a tail made out of tights tied with some elastic or similar round the waist. Not sure on what to do with the frame though!
And yes we are having a couple of real dalmations (owned by a couple of mums) on the back of the lorry!!!

With the frame - if she is a pirate, the frame could be turned into the bow of a ship - maybe with a flagpole for the skull and crossbones - or if she is a princess it could be the front of a carriage - my friend who is always annoyingly brilliant at this sort of thing made her dd a carriage - it was basically the Party Pieces (party stuff catalogue) food box carriage recreated into a larger scale out of cardboard carried over her dd's shoulder by two wide pieces of elastic - her dd just wore a princess dress, tiara and sandals. I would of thought that the front half of a carriage fixed to her frame would look fantastic.
badjelly - could the frame be turned into a kennel for the dalmation?

Chatee where are you? And how soon do you need it? I've got a lizard/iguana costume you could borrow if you like which would fit - it's sort of a hood and spined back/tail, and you'd just need some green clothes underneath it. It's a bit difficult to describe (it's nicer than I've made it sound) - I could take a photo of it tonight perhaps. I've had a look around the web, but I can't find a picture of a similar one - it's a bit like this , but without the legs and front, and the head part is attached to the sleeves, and it's made of a shinier scales-like material.

chatee · 10/06/2003 11:59

Gill W thanks for your kind offer but as usual I've left it till the last minute-the village gala is on Saturday
Thanks everyone for all the good ideas...decision time for dd this afternoon

I always had to be a cowgirl-denim skirt, little checked shirt, cowboy hat ,little waistcoat. Horses head on frame-oh no not a real one cardboard cut-out I was thinking

Boe · 10/06/2003 17:52

IKEA sell fancy dress costumes - I would get one from there and stick things to her frame to make the outfit a bit more jazzy!! (Hey Jazzy - sorry have had strange day today!!)

Tortington · 10/06/2003 20:29

a playing card like the ace of spades
flatten a box and put a hole in for head arms go out the existing holes in what WAS the top and bottom.

paint white leave to dry - paint black club or spade ( see the reason for it being an Ace now!)

i personally think buying a costume is a bit of a cop out ( personally) ( personally) and it gets on my nerves when spiderman wins when he obviously put his pyjamas on for the day when everyone else went to lots of trouble...anyway.. - i think this idea allows for movement and is very easy to take off when needed. i used this for my twins in infant school, becuase it didnt cost much - just a black tester pot or a marker. and they could take it off to play or go to the toilet.

so the idea is like a sandwich board - if you see what i mean

any way

good luck

chatee · 10/06/2003 21:02

Definetly can't be a bought outfit-Custardo I would agree with you there I would be the talking point of the village for weeks!!!
Thanks everyone for the ideas DD quite likes the idea of Little Bo Peep or Pirate-have told her to decide in the morning when we are in the craft shop(depending what stuff they have)
Will tell you how we get on...
My Mother says to me on the phone this morning"I used to hate making things for you, that was a good idea asking for ideas"I told her "I know Mother as I was the embarrassed one having to wear them and the embarrassment continued as you would take photos that's why I want to make DD something good"
We both had a good chuckle-lets hope DD appreciates this in years to come

How about one of the flowerpot men, you could cover the frame with cut-out leaves and roses made of tissue paper. Or a flower fairy along the same lines (prettier and more girly)

Whatever you do I hope she has a lovely day!

chatee · 14/06/2003 16:58
