Two brilliant buys

I have to share with you the two best purchases I've made in the last couple of weeks.

  1. How to Be Good, by Nick Horby. Read it in a week (work, two children, husband - so no mean feat!) It's brilliant and written by a man from a woman's perspective - spent whole time either laughing out loud or groaning inwardly. Is very scary the way he has got the woman so spot on. Read it, please!!!!!!
  2. Synergie Stop - anti aging cream. IT WORKS!!!!!

Melsj, how old do you look now then? Good luck with it.

The best thing I've bought this week is Beconase Nasal Spray for hay fever, my nose has a last stopped running. Oh and the box of K Nex we bought at the Boot Sale yesterday for £1.50.

melsj, i mentioned in the "good books" thread that i think nick hornby is only pretending to be a man, he does women so well...! have you read about a boy? (or whatever it's called!)

when you say the synergie cream works - how old are you (roughly) please??? (eg 35-40)

Melsj · 25/06/2001 12:05

Ok - all it's done is stop my eyes looking quite so wrinkly!! I still look my age, early thirties.
And I agree - Nick Hornby is either a woman or just a man who listens in on a lot of female conversations and takes notes.
I love About a Boy - it's being made into a film. And I'd like it to go on record here that I predict How to Be Good will also be made into a movie.

i have wrinkles in a lot more places than that but i'll give it a try (we have to do what we can, don't we!)
i also loved high fidelity - which surprised me a bit because from the bits i'd read about the film i thought a book about a record shop would be really boring...! (fever pitch was a bit too butch for me.)

Melsj · 25/06/2001 13:04

You want to get the video out of Fever Pitch - it's really good. I couldn't get into the book either.
High Fidelty - BRILLIANT!!
I bet you've read Man and Boy by Tony Parsons - if not, you'll love it.
I've just read The Go Between too (long story - involves cleaning out attic, finding old school books etc) which I hated as a teenager but adored this time around. All that angst - I love a bit of angst!!!

I loved Fever Pitch the film but also couldn't get into the book. Am just finishing "About a Boy" which is a very enjoyable, easy read. Difficult to imagine Hugh Grant as playing the lead though!.

Tusky · 25/06/2001 14:40

Melsj - yes the Syngergie Stop is very good !I'm not sure if it's anti-aged me yet,but it feels very nice ! and I loved Man & Boy - can't wait to read the new one - never cared for Tony Parsons before, but have warmed to him.Not so keen on Nick Hornby though - have read Fever Pitch and High Fidelity. Does any one else out there like Armistead Maupin ?

Janh · 25/06/2001 14:48

oh, bells1, have you not seen him with the short haircut? gorgeous doesn't begin to describe him. and he is so unattached and laid back and childless himself - i know that doesn't matter for an actor but it makes it easier to visualise him doing it.

Bells1 · 25/06/2001 14:52

Fair point Janh, it's just his upper class blinking / stuttering which makes it hard to see him as a Nirvana fan..... Haircut though is certainly a major improvement.

Janh · 25/06/2001 14:56

and he is actually very smart and very witty - he was on parkinson a bit ago with the new haircut. i was completely smitten!
i know what you mean about the stuttery/blinky/hair flopping over eyes bit though.

Marina · 26/06/2001 08:53

Oh Bells, I know quite a few nicely spoken, clean and tidy young men who IDOLISE Curt Cobain!
Tusky, I am more of an Armistead sort of gal myself. Did you see the Channel 4 series? I thought they were quite good, especially Laura Linney as Mary Ann and Olympia Dukakis as Mrs M.

Bells1 · 26/06/2001 09:03

Really? Oh well, I know absolutely nothing about any form of music that is more recent than my school days - just had a vague (and no doubt entirely undeserved) idea that Nirvana fans would be somewhat scruffy and spend a lot of time in darkened rooms... Janh, was quite cross about Hugh Grant's appearance on Parky. Tuned in expecting/hoping to find him immensely irritating and as you say, he was witty, intelligent and entertaining!. Not quite as bad though as having Liz Hurley revealed to be a genuinely talented actress - that WOULD be annoying!

Tusky · 26/06/2001 09:10

Marina - yes,I loved Tales of the City on tv -Mary Ann was great and Mrs Madrigal - have you read the other two novels (Maybe the Moon and the latest one-can't remember what it's called ?).

Janh · 26/06/2001 10:13

bells1, i don't think there's much danger of that! and if her lips get any fatter she won't be able to talk at all...which would be nice! (meow meow!)
