I'd be scared, but would go armed with a book (books are my security blanket ;) )

nailpolish · 29/06/2005 17:28

i like it if the restaurant is busy, lots of people watching

bossykate · 29/06/2005 17:29

pruni, i've spent a while researching, and i'm thinking of either the tresanton in cornwall or hotel du vin in brighton. no matter that we are skint! pah! i just want a quick uk break near the sea with some style... so not a health farm i think, although it's a good idea.

perhaps i'll give the dinner alone thing another try if and when i go.

dyzzidi · 29/06/2005 17:30

quite sad but the 'couples' who are clearly married to other people are the best to watch. As i am leaving I always glare at them you can see the panic they tend to think that they know me and I will spill the beans.

Room Service.

cardy · 29/06/2005 17:30

I have done this quite a lot when travelling with work (pre-children) and mostly enjoyed it. If I had the opportunity to do it now I would love it....eating in peace and quiet not having cooked in myself.

Perhaps take a book or newspaper.

RTKangaMummy · 29/06/2005 17:31

Yes the problem was it was sooo quiet

I had my back to the wall and so was looking at the restaurant

There were 3 other single women and 1 couple and this bloke on the next table.

newspapers are better than books rtkm cos you can lay them flat folded up beside you.

or just take the laptop! (joke)

MarsLady · 29/06/2005 17:33

Fantastic! No one to interrupt my quiet, no one to eat off of my plate, no one to cut food up for. How wonderful. I would take my book and read it and have a lovely LARGE glass of wine with my meal. Sounds like heaven!

nailpolish · 29/06/2005 17:34

its worse sitting in the bar if you feel like a drink (woman on her own - omg! shock horror! in a bar!)

unless you have said newspaper really

bossykate · 29/06/2005 17:36

for everyone saying they want peace and quiet, no interruptions etc, you get all that with room service too!

RTKangaMummy · 29/06/2005 17:36

Yes I took my new book

The BEN ELTON one about BB

But couldn't read and eat cos it kept closing

Suppose could take my mini Television that runs on batteries and prop it up on the table

ooh no, couldn't do room service. How would I get to gawp at the other people and earwig? Deffo stay at the table for me. The quiet would be the being away from the kids! lol

PMSL How true is that!

triceratops · 29/06/2005 18:00

I like room service you get to control the remote for the telly and you can eat what you like. Hotel restaurants (at least the corporate type ones that I used to go to for work) always manage to churn out the most disgusting food. The room service menu is more reheated frozen lasagne or burger and chips which is a much safer bet. And you don't have to get dressed

I don't have a problem eating alone in the hotel or in a restaurant. The only thing I don't like is being shuffled off into a corner for breakfast because I'm alone.

AnnaInManchester · 29/06/2005 18:32

I usually go away for a week at a time about 3-4 times a year by myself and I love sitting by myself! Usually there's someone else staying alone in the hotel (usually some old biddy) but people always stop to talk to me! Prob feel sorry for me!

RTKangaMummy · 29/06/2005 18:33

At brekkie it is fine cos lots of people moving about

The waiter puts me with my back to the wall so that is kind

It was dinner that scared me so much

I will try it tomorrow maybe

The food was lovely too but was so scared and self conscious

It was the first time ever of going it alone

I hate it - usually end up doing room service - feel too self conscious....

paolosgirl · 29/06/2005 19:23

When I used to go awayon business and stayed in hotels with my previous job (in the dim and distant past, sigh...)it didn't really bother me as I knew I was alone for a reason IYKWIM. I just took a book or mag, got stuck in and enjoyed not having to make conversation. Bliss!
