UK weekend break desperately needed

Dh and I have been getting uncharacteristically ratty with each other lately, so I have decided we need a hotel break away. Some peace and quiet so to speak, especially as we have some stressful months up ahead.
It's our 3rd anniversary this month, so that is going to be my excuse. I am not going to tell dh about it, I shall make it a surprise because I know that he will disagree and tell me we can't afford it.
I would like a nice country hotel for two nights, food and quiet will be most important. Therefore I would rather not go where there are likely to be any weddings IYSWIM.
Any ideas?

Where do you live and how far away are you prepared to travel?

zubb · 29/06/2005 11:32

which areas are you looking at?

northerner · 29/06/2005 11:35

Country House Hotel in July with no weddings taking place. Going to be difficult me thinks.

What location were you thinking of?

MrsDoolittle · 29/06/2005 11:40

Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Cambridgeshire, Sufffolk - anywhere in the middleish!

Just contacted a beautiful Hotel in Northamptonshire. They promised me that even though they has weddings they would be far away from the other guests. Errr £620 - two of us, two nights!

What's your budget?

MrsDoolittle · 29/06/2005 11:49

Dunno really. Not £620 though! Maybe I should just do one night?
It'll be my birthday and our wedding anniversary!
Maybe one night here?

I'd like romantic! But I don't know where?

ooh, what about The Crown and Castle at Orford? I haven't been there but it's owned by the woman who wrote the excellent book Fat Girl Slim, I bet the food's great. Adn it doesn't look too expensive!

MrsD - I was going to recommend Calcot Manor. I haven't stayed, but have eaten at the adjoining pub quite a bit and it is excellent. Lovely countryside around too - you're right in the Cotswolds.

renaldo · 29/06/2005 16:17

with or without kids?

crunchie · 29/06/2005 16:35

What about a Health farm type thing. I went to Hoar Cross Hall ages ago, food was good (you didn't notice it was good for you too) and you could drink wine, but there were no kids, no weddings and loads of lazing about in a bathrobe being pampered. Plenty of men too, not just women.

My geography is rubbish, but Bovey Castle on the Dartmoor National Park is lovely and very peaceful (can't guarantee no weddings though), it's a bit pricey though but the service, food etc is very good. It has a lot of stuff for children to do but if your going during term time it should be pretty quiet.

MrsDoolittle · 30/06/2005 19:31

Thank you all Ladies!!
Well I have it sorted - I looked at Calcot Manor, Thanks Chonky but it was slightly too expensive. Instead I have got a fabulous weekend deal here (still expensive though .
I'm so excited now, it'll be a hard job not telling dh!!

DH and I just had 15th anniv (married young). Planned to go to Venice but he money a bit tight (he's an actor) so we thought we'd go to Gloucestershire and a hotel for couple of nights. Money even tighter. Grrrrr. So we went for a meal. Also had to bring DS4 because I'm BFing him. Bonus consolation .... Paul McCartney and Heather were there and talked to us and the baby. Which was nice!
