Smelly Carpet!

Can anyone help me. The carpet in my dd's room is really smelly and I'm moving soon and don't want to have to fork out on steam cleaning (the guy buying our house is replacing the carpet anyway).

I don't want to use Febreze as I'm very allergic to it. Is there anything more natural I can use? Thought of scattering some baby powder on there and seeing if that helped.

All advice v v welcome

We're going to rent a steam cleaner which is a bit better than the ones you buy but much cheaper than professional steam cleaning. If I remember rightly the cost is about £25.00 from Homebase for the day. My husband knows the details more than I do but we're off to rent one tomorrow so I will let you know the outcome then. That might solve the problem.

Otherwise, how about some warm soapy water with something like Eucalyptus essence in it. Eucalyptus may be a bit strong but you could always mix it with some lavender, ylang ylang or something else like that. Do you know where the smelly bits are. Ours all occur around our ds's bed where he stands up to vomit over the railings so we can fix the problem where needed.

Oh my god, that sounds horrendous! The whole thing is permeated with a sort of musty smell, just months of calpol, milk, vomit etc, I think the whole thing needs attention. Would try shakeandvac but last time used it ended up in hosp with asthma.

Ok, wait for us to get the steam cleaner from Homebase tomorrow and I'll let you know the cost and for how long etc. I'm going to put some essence in the water when I steam clean it.

Our cats are right buggers and even though I put them out during the day they have become sneaky and wait for someone from one of the other flats to let them in to the stairwell during the day. I've found a few times they've urinated in our hall doorway (luckily no one else uses it) which now reeks so we have to get it tomorrow. Gross or what. They wee because they can't get back out again but telling people not to let them in isn't really practical. They've finally learnt the routine they need to get into and now go out first thing in the morning to do their toilet stuff but that doesn't stop the smell from when we first got them. Too much information for sure but I'll let you know how it all goes.

Bicarbonate of Soda. Spinkle it on, leave for a bit and hoover up. For the cats wee problem, soak up as much moisture as possible, sprinkle the bicarbonate of Soda on, leave to dry and then hoover up. Hope this helps.

meanmum, I am now going to have to hire a steam cleaner as dd vomited green stuff all over the carpet last night! How did you get on with it?

Steam cleaner cost us £27.00. We picked it up and found out it actually wasn't a steam cleaner but something like a water hoover. Spray the water on the floor and then hoover it back up but with quite an industrial machine. Dh did it yesterday and the carpets look fantastic and don't have any smell anymore. They are dry now so I would say 24-36 hours and they will dry. If you can hire a steam cleaner as opposed to the one we did so just make sure you specify. We ended up getting it from a tool hire place around the corner from our house so if you don't have a Homebase or B&Q near you that do it just look up hire places in the yellow pages. It shouldn't be that expensive.

Also, we just used dish washing detergent from Asda to clean the carpet as opposed to the stuff they try to sell you which costs loads more. The home brand Asda detergent costs 15p for a really big bottle. The stuff they wanted us to take cost £3.00 a bottle. The carpet looks brand new now.

It takes a fair bit of elbow grease but is definitely worth it. Good luck.

You do the Shake and Vac
And put the freshness back -
Do the shake and vac and put the freshness back.
When your carpet smells fresh
Your room does to-oo-oo
Every time you vacuum, remember what to do -
Do the shake and vac and put the freshness back -
Shake n Vac from Glade...............

Hmmmmmmm - some things stick.

Cleaning really isn't expensive - less than £23 per rooom and I'm in London. So worth it. carpets look like new and are NOT smelly!

SamboM · 08/06/2003 22:30

Attacked carpet with a bottle of carpet cleaner today and it looks great and doesn't smell any more. Cost £2.99! All green puke now gone thank god.

Good you have got it sorted SamboM, but this does remind me of my nana swearing by Novon (Sainsbury's own brand) for everything from soaking clothes to cleaning walls to cleaning carpets etc etc. My mum told me to use it to clean terracotta tiles when we moved into our house, and I couldnt believe the difference.

Batters - I hope so!! Bloody Hell!
Didn't she look so smart, wiggling all round the lounge with her swishy skirt and upright vac?
