but do rats really come out of loos? was hoping that was just a joke!

LilMissy · 25/06/2005 23:39

on a life of grime a rat came out of a loo, but the loo hadn't been used for years and had dried up

so i'd have thought a working loo was safe

Nightynight · 25/06/2005 23:39

I believe it has been known, but they have to swim though the water, so presumably would have to know that there was something worth getting to at the other end?

cant say I am personally acquainted with anyone that this has happened to.

dinny · 25/06/2005 23:40

what, like poo?!

Janh · 25/06/2005 23:41

If I was a rat who had scrambled all the way to the top and been thwarted by a wire cage I would make it my mission in life to find the nearest human bum and bite it

Flossam · 25/06/2005 23:41

Important message announcement - do not leave cheese on your toilet cistern!!!

Nightynight · 25/06/2005 23:47

Re the advice on getting a cat, I have it on good authority (the pest control man who was dispatched by Environmental Health to get rid of our rats) that dogs - particularly a terrier (jack russel terrier or border terrier in particular) are far more effective at catching rats than cats. Apparently cats are only good for the baby rats.

Other things to bear in mind - do you leave rubbish or food lying around outside? We don't have wheely bins provided by our council and used to keep full big bags in our garage until it was time for refuse collection. But the rats could smell it and chewed bits of the garage door away to get at the rubbish. The rubbish bags are now stowed in a galvanised steel container.

Also, after feeding the children outside on the patio I sweep up every remnant of food and hose it all down for good measure.

Ive just watched a mouse scamper across my living room and then went downstairs where they run accross my cooker,(um,hygenic............not!)

Nightynight · 26/06/2005 00:59

It depends on the cat. Some are good ratters, some are scared of rats.

was the one you saw carrying a tiny suitcase? that could be a giveaway.

mandyc66 · 26/06/2005 08:04

round here the council do it for free, but seem to take their time!! Apparently everyone is only about 6 ft from a rat most of the time..so dont feel grossed out!!!

happymerryberries · 26/06/2005 08:43

Contact the council. Tis is not something that you can deal with satisfactoraly on your own. If you are seeing one rat, chances are there are lots of them. THey may need to look into where they are coming from, there may be problems with the drains for example , or the sewers.

They carry all manner of diseases (not true of pet rats btw), one of the worst being Weils (sp?) disease which causes a rather nasty for mf jaundice and is very serious.
