Still recovering from yesterday ThomCat - underarm more painful than bikini IMO. Get the Pimms out - it's sunny here.

wickedstepmother · 05/06/2003 16:08

Enjoy !

ThomCat · 05/06/2003 18:06

Thanks Willow2 & wickedstepmother - glad someone cares!!

Underarms HURT! Even more than bikini and much more than Botox...

I shave under arms after trying it once. Agree that hairless tanned flab looks better. Will have St Tropez before heading to France this summer in order not to frighten natives.

scoobysnax · 05/06/2003 19:41

Ingrowing hairs caused by waxing are worse on the bikini line than on your legs IMO for what it's worth! I am a fanof leg waxing but scared off the bikini wax scene...

scoobysnax · 05/06/2003 19:43

Aloha, spill the beans on your botox experience - how much (£?), how painful, how worthwhile, will you do it again?

aloha · 05/06/2003 19:51

I have to admit, I really liked it. Great for getting rid of those v-shpe frown lines and forehead tramlines - they vanish. I also admit, I didn't pay for it - a perk of the job. It costs around £200 and only lasts around 4-6months, so it's expensive. But, unlike creams it works. And provided you don't go bonkers you don't look like Cliff Richard either. Pain? Somewhere between eyebrow plucking and bikini wax..

I won't rush to pay for it, but give it a couple more years....

scoobysnax · 05/06/2003 20:01

What age is the age to start, Aloha, IYO?

aloha · 05/06/2003 20:51

IMHO, it's only appropriate when you have expression lines that don't go away when you stop pulling that expression. I was fed up with frown lines that were there (albeit faintly) when I wasn't frowning and made me look even crosser than I am. After a couple of goes with Botox they have gone and actually seem reluctant to reappear - perhaps I frown less these days, who knows? Most dermatologists etc recommend from late 30s, but of course all celebs have from early/mid twenties.

Having researched this I honestly, honestly don't think there is much that can go wrong. There is a very small risk of ending up with a droopy eye but it's a small risk and totally reversible. I don't want to sound like I'm advertising it, but the risks seem to be overstated. You do have to take some simple precautions, like not vigorously rubbing your face like a loon the minute you've had the injections (can cause the Botox to migrate). There are no long-term studies on its use as a cosmetic treatment but it has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (normally v strict licensing agency) in the US and has been used for things like facial twitches for nearly 20 years in US - and that means repeated treatments. You can also get a nasty headache for a day or so afterwards, but that's also pretty unusual. Just make sure it's a dr giving the injections and that they've done it lots of times before. The guy who did me last time works in the NHS giving Botox injections to people with medical probs and does cosmetic work on his days off - I felt pretty small though, having it for a tiny wrinkle while he treats kids with CP... but I wasn't taking him away from them, just his golf course!

aloha · 05/06/2003 23:04

I also recently did a feature in which a couple of Botox 'virgins' had the treatment and they were both delighted. Mind you, they weren't paying for it!

lou33 · 06/06/2003 00:08

Aloha, can I ask if you interviewed this man about botox and cp? It's just ds's physio says he would benefit from it when or if he starts walking. I'm constantly looking for new opinions about it.

alibubbles · 06/06/2003 09:47

I wax my underarms and bikini myself, also do DD's for her. Takes 2 minutes to do arms, and doesn't hurt at all after 30 years!!

Seriously, I don't think underarms hurt, but backs of legs just before your period ar AGONY!!

scoobysnax · 06/06/2003 16:25

Alibubbles - what's the best home waxing kit, IYO? I always go to a salon but would like to try at home!

alibubbles · 06/06/2003 16:43

scoobysnax, I use the babyliss 8800, it is cordless and a roll on. The refills come from Boots or John Lewis, I buy the removal strips from the local beauty salon supplier about £2.50 for 100 strips, plus the after wax cooling lotion, huge bottle for about £3, stops all the redness.

It is really simple to use, and I've had a few waxing kits in my time!

scoobysnax · 06/06/2003 17:04

Thanks Alibubbles, I knew you'd have some good advice! I'll give it a go! Is this a hot wax system?
And is it easy to get the hang of?
I tried ages ago and the wax just stuck to my legs, so obviously I was going wrong on the temperature or something!

alibubbles · 06/06/2003 18:21

Hi. this is the third time I have tried to post an answer, don't know what is happening, must be my new glasses!

It is thermostatically controlled so only gets warm, not hot if kept plugged in. I use it on cordless for awkward places, (no I haven't managed a Brazilian yet!!) It is easy to pop the plug back in to stop it cooling, while you rip off a strip!

Make sure you exfoliate your legs the night before you wax, as dry skin makes the wax stick, or rub down with surgical spirit, do under arms an bikini line with talc before you wax those.

Good luck

mmm · 06/06/2003 20:00

I've got one of those machines that RIP your hairs out from your legs and then leave them all splotchy and of a roseate glow - I tried it on my p and a man friend and they climbed the wall. I have a real love/hate relationship with 'beauty' treatments because of course I want to look as gorgeous as the rest of the mumsnetters BUT I want to be natural too and not get hooked into to all that stuff. Tricky.

yoko · 09/06/2003 20:39

what have i done to myself?!in my quest to make my legs appear less revolting i have been asking advice/following tips from all you defuzzing/self tanning beauties.i've been out and purchased my self tanner for flourescent legs and in a moment of madness bought a home waxing kit.i studied instructions for ages and then set to...and now look whats happened-i could only manage patches of 1 leg cos it hurt soo much, and i'm now left with hundreds of tiny red pinpricks all over, skin itself is not red tho'.shall i try again tomorrow?will all thses red dots go?i cant beleve how much worse my legs now look.if you ever see me on a thread about doing home hairhighlights or suchlike then just shout nooo.

WideWebWitch · 09/06/2003 20:42

eeeeewwwww yoko!

aloha · 09/06/2003 20:43

Lou33, sorry I didn't reply earlier - just seen your post. No, I didn't but my friend has a nephew with CP who has Botox injections and is journalist who has interviewed the top man in the field. Are there any questions I could ask her for you as she has both professional and personal experience. I would be very happy to help if possible.

Gizmo · 09/06/2003 20:47

As a gutless member of mumsnet can i just add a vote for the veet aerosol foam. Tried it last week and it was fab - only took 15 minutes and left me with seriously nice smooth legs (quite a feat with my fuzz levels)

Not that I'm bothered by the pain of waxing but I'm always intimidated by disgusted look I get from the beautician when I turn up with 6 weeks of growth, having forgotten to make an appointment any earlier!

yoko · 09/06/2003 20:53

oh i saw that veet foam stuff,if only i'd got it ,eh?i think some of the problem stems from the "holding skin taut" bit,i have more flesh than is normal so trying to hold it taut was a feat in itself, perhaps a few bulldog clips would have come in handy!!think ill stick to being white, fat and hairy!!!
