I have to confess to being a bit thick when it comes to some of the abreviations on the message boards (this technology is fairly new to me) and it's now getting to me. What does ds,dd stand for? Would I be right in thinking it might be dear daughter and dear son? If there are any other common ones could I have a break down on those please. I'm one confused computer-holic.

hi, binza! yes, those are right; LOL is "laugh out loud" (american); ROFLOL is roll on floor laughing out loud- there are variations on this theme! dh is dear husband; mil, fil, bil etc are in-laws. can't think of any more just now but if you come across one do ask and someone will tell you!

(and to do a little yellow smile it is just colon and right curved bracket without a space in between!)

Thanks guys now I feel one step closer to mastering this machine. BUT I've just tried to do a little yellow smile and failed miserably, look How does it turn yellow? and more to the point I don't have anything that looks remotely like it would make a happy little face on my keyboard. Perhaps I bought the "miserable looking woman" type computer instead. arrrgh!

Thanks for LOL, I was beginning to wonder! I could only think of light of my life!

Tusky · 23/06/2001 15:33

isn't LOL lots of love ?

Janh · 23/06/2001 16:57

tusky, i think some people do use it for that - esp on mobile phone text messages - i mean if you put LOL tusky xxx at the end of a message they would know what you meant.
generally, on message boards, if someone says something you find funny you can respond with LOL and nothing else, if you're in a hurry or can't think of an instant reply. it's the written equivalent of laughing...

Janh · 23/06/2001 17:01

binza, there is a blue one here too (it's the mumsnet board that provides it; on other boards it tends to just come out how you did it like :o) or ;o) (wink)

i THINK the blue one is colon left bracket (no space) - i will try it!

yep - that's it - 2 eyes and a glum mouth!
