Hi Cori, bit girly maybe but we made a nice pot one year for my mum - it was a terracotta one with ds's handprints all over it in different colours. We made a spare so I've got it on my kitchen window sill full of spatulas and wooden spoons, but you could make a smaller one as a pen holder or a larger one with some flowers in it. I'm very glad I kept one for myself as his hands are so much bigger now, even a year later.

Once I got a long photo frame for DHs birthday, one that was designed to take 3 photos. DS1 was 7 months old and I took 1 photo of him, 1 photo of him shrieking with glee whilst I munched him from behind (used the self timer!) and in the middle I put a hand print. DS1s hand print, not mine!

Is your little one too little to help you make him a lovely cake? Something you've both slaved over? You could leave him little messages from you both all over the house where he'll find them.
Both very cheap indeed.

i bought dd a photo frame - silver with a short piece about fathers and put a pic of dd and him in it for him. This year - not very creative - dvd's - although am trying to get dd's hand prints copied so I can cross stitch them in his favourite colours to frame with a message from dd.

expatkat · 04/06/2003 19:22

er--when is father's day?

pie · 04/06/2003 19:23

I think its this Sunday

eidsvold · 04/06/2003 19:23

15 June

SoupDragon · 04/06/2003 19:28

Yep. 15th June.

nobby · 04/06/2003 19:28

Yeah, it's a great week. First my birthday, then ds's then Father's Day, so we all get pressies and spoilt.

Claireandrich · 04/06/2003 20:27

Part of Dh's pressie is a framed picture drawn by DD. She's only 14 months and only recently 'discovered' painting and colouring so for us it will be a first. Going to get it framed in one suitable for him to have on his office wall.

jac34 · 04/06/2003 20:45

DH has got a load of golfing stuff off us (not very original), his Birthday is two days before, plus we'll be on holiday at the time and my Dad is coming too. So I'll have to take all the pressies with us, but it will be a good opportunity to have a nice big, family meal on the terrace of our villa.

SofiaAmes · 04/06/2003 22:52

I gave dh a pedicure for his birthday a few years ago and he (super macho man that he is) absolutely loved it (despite the very very gay french guy who administered it).

meanmum · 04/06/2003 22:58

There are lots of pottery shops out now where you go and choose an item and then paint it with glaze in a design you like. I've made a platter for us with ds's hands and footprints on it, one for my mum and dad with his foot prints walking around the edge of it as if he actually did and then a hand print right in the middle. Also made a mug with his hand prints around it for dh to take into the office. I'm in a bit of a phase at the moment as you can tell by how much we've done but it is great and not too expensively priced.

Daffy · 04/06/2003 23:06

I thought it was the 22nd....are you sure??

Oh.....sht. It's early this year then usually around the 20th. Bo**cks! Still plenty of time. Just thought I'd timed it right with a holiday away that's all.

meanmum · 04/06/2003 23:19

If you've got major issues then just say you're working on the Australian Father's Day which doesn't happen until the first weekend in September. That gives you loads and loads of time.

eidsvold · 05/06/2003 06:55

I tried that with mother's day - saying that I needed pressies then ( being an aussie livingin the UK) If we had stayed in australia a week longer then I would have managed two. One in the uK just before we flew out - oh well.

My dh is lucky - father's day one week, his birthday the next.

That pottery idea is brilliant. We had a tile made up with dd's footprints and the date, name etc to hang on the wall.

Lennie · 05/06/2003 08:20

I'm an Aussie in the UK too and I always have to remember to buy my mum and dad cards when they're on sale over here. Last year I forgot and sent my mum a birthday one with 'birthday' crossed out and 'mother's day' written in as a bit of a joke. Good thing she understands my sense of humor

meanmum · 05/06/2003 08:40

I'm very lucky. My parents are so practical that I don't send anything and they don't get upset when I forget to call them and wish them happy mothers or fathers day. I suppose that is because I must speak to them every second or third day.

cori · 05/06/2003 14:09

Good to see that there are other Aussie mums on Mumsnet. We are Aussies living in the UK too. I think as DS (17 months) has just started to scribble recently , we might give finger painting a go next week. Getting it framed would be a good idea as well.
I also like the idea of hand prints on a mug.
Does anyone know of these pottery shops in the Harrow area? the only one i know is in Hammersmith.

SilverUK · 05/06/2003 14:31

I live in Harrow too, and I've seen somewhere nearer than Hammersmith that does footprint ceramics in an NCT newsletter a long time ago. This site is good (I don't know how to make a link) www.netmums.com/harrow/ Join it and post a message on the noticeboard, someone will know I'm sure. My DH is getting a paperback (yawn). Beter than last year-nothing!

badjelly · 06/06/2003 10:21

Not much use ideas wise for you guys but dd's christening is on fathers day - thought it would be kinda cool and save us having to think of a proper pressie for him

BigBird · 06/06/2003 11:25

We take turns getting up at night to dd so i'm going to include vouchers in his card for nights off and I'll do the 'turn'

calcium · 09/06/2003 17:15

what man knows its fathers day on Sunday anyway? It just hapens to be my dh's birthday so i have managed to book a nice lunch in a local place which is child friendly (without the awful child meal thing) they supply high chairs so thats where we'll be celebrating needless to say I'll be driving so he can drink which should put a smile on his face!
