grommit · 02/06/2003 14:56

zip-up jumpsuits - it seems they are back in fashion - AGGHHH. Jeans with baggy bottoms hanging near knees - glad I am too old and missed that one! Agree about the crush velvet jogging suits - just too Waynetta

Mo2 · 02/06/2003 15:02

friend said she wasn't wearing a bikini this year (just over a year since ds2... still wobbly) buy going for a 'tankini' instead... I had to go running for my Next directory later to find out what she meant - can't see that it'll help much - the wobbly bits still hang over the top of the bottoms if you see what I mean??

codswallop · 02/06/2003 16:30

quite good but when you get to spain of bournemouth or wherever you realise that no one is looking at you as hard as you look at yourself and that no one is interested. also you look weird compared to the other fatties in bikinis

tankinis only really look good on incredibly thin, toned, relatively flat-chested people with good shoulders.
pity they are always worn by lardy people with wobbly tummies and breasts that could really do with some proper support...

meanmum · 02/06/2003 16:42

Jeans with the crotch hanging down around the knees. I know it is fashionable for the boys, supposedly, but I just want to grab the belt loops and yank them up every time I see someone wearing them like that. Especially older guys who aren't in physical shape.

I can't believe ra ra skirts have come back. Those are the ones with the layers of ruffles, generally 3. I've seen a few lately but mostly worn over pants.

I never got the hang of why you would wear a skirt/dress over pants.

Socks being worn with Sandals. I went to the shoe shop for ds yesterday and the assistant was trying to convince me I couldn't buy the sandals I wanted for him unless he was going to wear socks with them as they would hurt him. She then offered canvas shoes which looked far to feminine so I figure he'll go bare foot all summer.

Wearing combat trousers with high heels. Seems like a contradiction to me.

judetheobscure · 02/06/2003 16:49

It's the trousers with dangly bits debate again - I've hankered after a pair for a while now - finally bought a khaki pair, a tenner in the local market and they look fab. Two friends comments "you're not a teenager you know" and "those are just soooo you". This particular pair is very comfy, does up round the waist not the hips so no flabby flesh showing and just are not plain and boring. I'm definitely going to go back and buy one (or more) of the other colours.

Crunchie · 02/06/2003 17:25

Thanks wilshirelass :D I now know what I shouldn't be wearing!! I wear a Tankini, I love it, from M&S I looks like a one peice swimsuit, but with a little bit of midriff showing. I have good shoulders, but as for the rest!! I just wouldn't feel so comfy in a bikini, the tankini is great if you have kids as it doesn't fall off when they grab you, like a bikini can and it looks great with shorts over the bum!

Demented · 03/06/2003 12:21

Hmmmm, another tankini wearer here! Like Crunchie I just thought it was a good compromise between a bikini (which I don't think I have the figure for) and a one piece costume which I am sick of and can't find one with support for my bust that fits properly everywhere else. It offers no support for my 34F bust, but hey I've got nice shoulders too!

SoupDragon · 03/06/2003 19:52

Here's one for you, Codswallop : a mini skirt with all those dangling straps! One of the staff at the hairdressers was wearing one. I did think about running after her with the scissors but managed to restrain myself.

pie · 03/06/2003 20:08

Its not just the fashion though its the makeup.

Three down last one on the row

You should have heard my sister curse, something about why anyone would want to dress as a cross between Ms Haversham and Kiss.

snickers · 03/06/2003 21:30

Loving this thread. I wondered recently as I was searching in vain for something to wear, that didn't have dangly straps, where the trousers weren't dragging along the floor, non-flourescent, non gypsy/floaty/ asymetric cuts, with only one shoulder; whether this year was a really bad year for fashion, or whether I have finally reached that magic age where you start hating all fashion, and start using phrases like "classic" and "wearable". (I can hear Victoria Wood saying "oooh - those scholl sandals look comfy".)

I saw a pair of kitten heel, turquoise shoes with a pointy toe, and "rouched" to boot, and remembered that I had a pair exactly like them when I was 15. I wasn't even sure I liked them that much THEN! AWFUL!

Currently wearing a nice pair of combats, which annoy me because they are too long, and got out a pair of stilletos I don't wear much, and tried them on. Don't think I have had such a good laugh in ages. Off they went, on went the Teva's instead.

It's a world gone mad I tell ya!

snickers · 03/06/2003 21:31

Have to say I love glitter and lip gloss though

nobby · 03/06/2003 21:36

Sadly, I remember wearing a puffball skirt with braces, stripy tights and monkey boots...

Have to say that i considered changing my nickname before admitting to that one (but don't know how!).

I wouldn't dream of wearing most of the stuff around now but feel quite fond of fashion victims as they walk down the street. They're having fun. Do you remember spending all Saturday getting ready for a night out?

snickers · 03/06/2003 22:10

It was YOU that snogged my boyfriend at that party when he thought I wasn't looking!!!!

(overwhelming recollection of cool, trendier than I girl wearing said puffball, stripy tights and boots etched on my memory forever...)

nobby · 04/06/2003 14:17

Quite possibly but I didn't know he had a girlfriend .

CAM · 04/06/2003 14:27

Aaah but Snickers, Scholl sandals are THE trendy footwear for this year (revived in all sorts of groovy colours/patterns).

codswallop · 15/06/2003 21:28

they are calles jungle pants , those trousers.. so there you are.

Pie ... it was this in that link that made me laugh ...
"This season's Victims‚ on the catwalk are confused, raw and refined. Contrasts of excessive femininity and angry abandon. The prom queen in her sweet pink bedroom and her nemesis, the dark and hardcore androgyny of the school misfit, fused as one."
What a total load of tosh!!
I have never understood catwalk fashions ... it's just fancy dress ... NO ONE really wears that stuff do they? My SIL, who is a designer shakes her head despairingly when I say that and very carefully and slowly explains that the whole point is that the ideas are taken and recreated for the 'regular' person in the street to wear ... so, I repeat ... what is the point??
Anyhoo ... I love flairs (very flattering) but hate hipsters (very unflattering ... 'specially after having a baby!) ...
Love the evening shoes with combats and jeans and pretty top and nice handbag thing ... but hate the trousers with straps dangling off them ... not that they have hit NZ yet ...
Like snickers I love glitter and lip gloss and the lipstick with 'diamonds' or the wet look ...
Can't stand it that all trousers are hipsters and all tops are too short to cover the tum ...
Hate it that blue eyeshadow is back (or it is in NZ) ... never liked it the first time round!!!!

XAusted · 15/06/2003 21:59

I was looking for something to wear for a Christmas "do" last year. Found a blouse I liked and spent ages trying to find one of the sleeves (thought it was inside out or something) until I realised it only had one sleeve. Silly me.

Definitely don't get the fashion for wearing hipsters with several inches of thong showing at the back. If you want to show off your knickers, why not wear them on top, a la Superman?
