I used to car-share with a colleague, I'd drive two days and she'd drive for two. The other day we both had after-work commitments so drove ourselves - but the point was that we shared the driving.

If either of us had done all the driving, we would have paid the other petrol money. Our work's travel policy even gives guidelines on how much you should pay your driver - it was a certain amount per mile.

More people in car = higher fuel consumption and wear on tear of car I've been told.

And, if I drive down to Mum and Dad's with my sister (450 mile round trip) we always split the petrol costs.

It's horses for courses I suppose. I just feel that it's fairer to split costs.

Has your DH ask to be picked up, or dropped off rather than walking? Is the walk worth putting up with for the pay-off of not having to completely fund his own way in to work every day?

it shouldn't be a question of being tight. It should be a question of sharing the costs.

They are already extending goodwill by going out of their way to help you, or transport you, why should they also have to pay all the costs.

Not saying you should always want the money - you may get repayed in kind in numerous ways - but when it is all one way the giver often feels put upon and expected to do all the running around and never get any acknowledgment.

I wouldn't dream of asking, but I would like an offer to be made. I would refuse I think, but still. I spend a lot of my time driving dd and her friends around. On Tuesday evenings I take her friend home after Brownies, this is an extra 20 km each way. I think that because I am a SAHM, people do take advantage of me in some ways. The girl I drive home is lovely, her mum is too but, they are so wedged up they have their own swimming pool so don't consider the person who doesn't have a bean.

I can't believe I'm the only person tight enough to ask their own children for a contribution to fuel
