wats a crb?

stitch · 14/06/2005 16:43

depends on what the record is for.

mandyc66 · 14/06/2005 16:46

if you want to be a teacher maybe you should ask at the college?

gothicmama · 14/06/2005 19:13

friend has tried to ask at college -
stitch is there anyway of finding out what they def would not consider I don't know the full facts as it were but thought trying here might help out

TBH I don't know what specific things would exclude you. I have a speeding ticket (5 years old) and that didn't exclude me from teaching

Moomin · 14/06/2005 19:17

driving offences aren't counted. anything to do with drugs or violence may be dodgy, depends on severity of offence and relevance to working with children.

mandyc66 · 14/06/2005 20:55

who do the checks these days? is it the police still or social services or both. Ask them.

I would be worried if someone having a child related offence wer to go into teaching

My teacher friend has drunk and disorderly on his records from uni days and has never had any problems.

mandyc66 · 14/06/2005 21:24

Pruni ? am I miss reading your message are you saying that someone with a child related conviction or even questioning should be given a chance to teach?

oh. I see what you mean. Yes thats true, if you were questioned but found not to have been involved. Yes that would be unfair. sorry I misunderstood!!

Xena · 14/06/2005 21:56

What they are supposed to pick up on is the people Like for instance Ian Huntley who had a string of accusations to his name but that they hadn't had enough evidence to convict in the past.

eidsvold · 14/06/2005 23:07

I know when they did mine it was also only a county check - think they were talking of closing that loop hole but not sure if they had.

It originally meant that if you wanted to teach in Essex and had a conviction for something in Lancashire then it would not show up.

I guess it would depend what it was.

mandyc66 · 15/06/2005 09:48

Its scary really that these people can slip through the net

gothicmama · 15/06/2005 10:55

the offences are not child related -just want to state-

Just thought i'd add my experience.
My friend had a drink driving offence from before uni (i think it was about 5 years before she applied for any jobs)that did come up on her check. Schools did question her about the offence and she was just honest about it, saying it was a mistake not to be repeated etc. She said it wasnt a pleasant experience, but they gave her the job.

do you teach? not english I hope..lol.only joking!!!

SofiaAmes · 15/06/2005 23:12

I think it also depends on the age of the children. My dh has an extensive criminal record (oh well...he has other virtues), but it's all from a long time ago and none of it is violent or involving children. He mentors teenagers permanently excluded from school. At one point he was doing this officially through the council and they ran a check on him and although they fussed about about his record, they did allow him to do it officially since the whole reason he was effective was that he had that type of a background.
