It's got to be Dirty Dancing!

GeorginaA · 25/05/2003 20:58

Always read the book after the movie. The book usually has more detail and has very specific characterisation that you can't get across on a big screen. If you really enjoyed a book it's really hard to accept how the director interpretted that book and chose the actors they did.

If you watch the film first then even if you really loved it, you'll get extra detail and plot from the book but still picture the characters you loved without them getting in the way of how the book was written and describes them.

I've read some fantastic books all because I'd seen a good (or even mediocre for that matter) film and thought "I bet there's more behind xyz, I wonder if there was a book written first" and waited for the credits for the author. I'm sad to say that I haven't seen any films that I've really enjoyed having read the book first (unless it's a book of the film of course).

Most of my favourites have been mentioned but would just like to second Dirty Dancing, Fried Green Tomatoes, Four Weddings and About a Boy. Also like Muriel's Wedding, Bridges of Madison County, Riding in Cars with Boys, There's Something About Mary, My Big Fat Greek Wedding ...... I'm sure there must be more!

Hope you feel better soon!

French Kiss! Laugh, cry and go ahhhhh. Makes me want to jack it all in every time and buy a vineyard on the continent.

Hope you feel better soon.

The Wedding Singer - top 80's soundtrack!

Bossanova · 25/05/2003 22:50

I second Muriel's Wedding and Strictly Ballroom and while we're on Aussie films, I love The Aventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert.

Ange8 · 25/05/2003 23:55

And another Australian film - The Dish - it's a lovely comedy set at the time of the first moon landing, and one small Australian town's role in the event. Can be bought second hand on Amazon!

Holly02 · 26/05/2003 00:43

While we're on Aussie films Bossanova & Ange8, have you seen Lantana? It's brilliant - try & get hold of it if you can. (It was out last year I think). It's kind of a drama/thriller, is about
relationships and affairs, and the acting is great.

Anyway I also love When Harry Met Sally & Jerry Maguire, Notting Hill, and remember An Officer & a Gentlemen from the eighties?? That was a real chick flick too. These aren't really chick flicks but I also love The Money Pit with Tom Hanks, and Housesitter with Steve Martin/Goldie Hawn.

Pretty Woman is myt fave.

megg · 26/05/2003 10:16

Agree with most of these but my absolute favourite is An Affair to Remember, ok I admit anything with Cary Grant in. Any Doris Day film and Roman Holiday with Audrey Hepburn. Thelma & Louise is up there and My Cousin Vinny. Hope you're feeling better Happycat.

spacemonkey · 26/05/2003 10:45

also Driving Miss Daisy, The Amazon Queen, Fanny and Elvis and Bringing Up Baby

Cha · 26/05/2003 11:35

I can't believe no one has mentioned the BEST film ever made.

THELMA AND LOUISE

I never watch a film more than once unless it is by accident but I have seen Thelma and Louise 7 or 8 times and it still makes me cry at the end.

Holly02 · 26/05/2003 11:38

Cha - megg mentioned Thelma & Louise about four posts down!!

It IS a good chick flick.

GeorginaA · 26/05/2003 12:12

Remembered another one I loved which isn't well known: Something To Believe In. Basically, the girl has a fatal illness and is travelling across Italy to find a weeping Madonna hoping for a cure. Along the way meets a struggling pianist and they fall in love. Prepare for lots of weepiness - very very good film.

whymummy · 26/05/2003 12:21

true romance, i love it!!!
