Washable Nappies

Hi everyone,

I have just bought some washable nappies and think they are excellent, but for one thing. They are so bulky that my daughter cannot bring her legs together. My husband is worried that she might grow to be bow-legged!

Did anyone else have this problem? If so, were your children ok? I really want to continue using them, but am worried that I might be damaging her growing legs. Please someone tell me that my worries are unjustified!

Enid-napisan isn't recommended for use as a soak with kooshies or the all-in-one types because it rots the waterproofing.

Enid, you don't need to soak as long as you wash the nappies every 3-4 days, and rinse pooey nappies well first. It's called dry-pailing and I far prefer it to soaking. When I used washables I dry-pailed (in summer, even) and put a few drops of tea-tree oil in the rinsewater for the pooey nappies if they were badly marked. Never had any problems. I also put a Calgon tablet in every nappy or towels load.

Well I think dd2 must have yellow dye instead of poo as i have just washed a load on 60, with a prewash and a cupful of Vanish and they are STILL stained...and I had soaked them too.

You can't rinse bfed poo, it just soaks in.

Ace gentle bleach, you are my only hope.

Hi, just reading about stains. I put a scoop of oxyclean into every nappy wash and my nappies are pristine. And it is OK with septic tanks too! HTH

Now I'm onto the second child's nappies I'm not very concerned about stains. Had lots of stained nappies with no 1 son but non have been life threatening.

At which stage does the treatment for the stains become bigger than the reason for using cottons in the first place?

I dry pail with mine too. I think it smells less than soaking.

I also agree that stains don't really matter all that much. Life's too short really, isn't it???

Well, sadly (or not, whatever your preference), my life ISN'T too short to try and get stained nappies clean

Vanish Oxiclean seems to have done the trick anyway, so thanks for that recommendations.

I know this will be of no help as it is winter and sunshine is nowhere to be seen but... during the summer I found hanging them on the line the best way to remove stains as the sun acts as a natural bleach. Also of no help but I have one totsbot nappy and that stains a lot more than the terry squares that I have - no idea why.
I am not soaking mine now dd is older and her poos are more solid (not as many stains) but I soaked them in water and tea tree oil when every nappy was runny bf poo. Doesn't life become so basic when you have a baby!!
