Last minute as usual....I have 2 tickets to Glastonbury for the 1st time. I had thought my almost yr old little girl would be off the boob by now, but no. Therefore, really I have to take her and my 4 yr old (and my hubby who isn't too keen). Also have 2 yr old but hoping my mum will have him. So, has anyone been with kids? What is it honestly like? Will the kids be okay? Please be honest.....

My little girl is only really feeding off me once during the day but quite a bit a night (more comfort I think), but I'd feel bad leaving her even though I'm ready to give up now. She doesn't drink a lot from a cup.Any thoughts???

Incidentally do you have nice glasses? - why are they so nice? (not taking the pee, honestly - just curious)

Frizbe · 08/06/2005 23:49

Go, go, take them both, its fab, we missed out on tickets this year, but last year took our 7mth old and our just 6 year old, we had a fab time, NCT have a tent in the kids field, which is great, has baby yoga, loads of play areas, for bubbas n toddlers alike, the greenfields has great kids stuff too in the greenpeace area, (although we were also there for the mud, as it rained, don't take a 3 wheeler, I saw loads with wheels off stuck! daft bugger who put straw down, not good for buggies) but yeah go, its great with kids, a totally different experience to doing it wasted! but hey, its also what the festival is all about, family n chilling, if there are bands you wanna do later on, just do shifts, sorted, our kids loved it, totally safe for them and wouldn't hesitate to take them back again. CAT me if I can be of any use!

Frizbe · 08/06/2005 23:50

PS: Nct tent has changing, as does greenfields, also microwave, kettles, at NCT, and highchairs, n lots of nice people willing to assist!

handlemecarefully · 09/06/2005 00:00

Blimey, if this thread carries on with all the positives, I might just end up going myself .

Go on, go Niceglasses!

SpanishEyes · 09/06/2005 00:04

I'm not sure I would want my kids living so rough for a few days and camping like that.

SpanishEyes · 09/06/2005 00:04

and I definately wouldn't take a baby camping in a muddy glastonbury field!!!

Frizbe · 09/06/2005 00:04

Now't wrong with camping lass! and on that note off to bed!

niceglasses · 09/06/2005 11:50

OOOh I change me bleedin mind every day. Thanks Firzbe....made me feel more like I should go. Its not ideal to take such a young baby (well a year) but don't have much alternative as still feeding her and she will not tolerate bottles/cups.......so seems even more cruel to leave her with whoever and no means really of milk............keep them coming girls

PS - I don't wear glasses, but I used to!!! I have 2 lazyeyes (I used to be lazyeye) and they thought wearing glasses would help but me eyes are actually okay.....I was one of them kids with the patch and the nhs specs....its very confusing for the pple I'm talking to (and for me!!)

hello niceglasses, haven't heard from you for a while and didn't even know that number 3 turned out to be a dd - congratulations
well I have only been to Glastonbury once, 18 years ago so its probably v different now.
I would say that the one year old will probably be less of a problem than the 4 year old, who will be a bit of a runnign off danger, and will also need to use the loos and will also have
Could you get someone to take both the older kids?
Personally I would go if you want to, you don't get these opportunities very often.

tarantula · 09/06/2005 15:08

Have to say we took dd (6 mnths) camping with us last year for the weekend to Old Sarum where there were no camping facilities except Portaloos and water. No problems at all. Cant see why anyone could turn their nose up at camping for kids. Planning to go on two more camping trips this year with no facilties and going train and backpack cos we have no car. Living rough for a bit and camping is part of what childhood should be all about.

Id go to Glastonbury with dd like a shot but cant afford the tickets esp as they provide family camping areas etc away from all the young teenagers out to have fun.

niceglasses · 09/06/2005 15:09

Hi Elliot, how are you?

Yes, I had a little girl right at the end of June called Nancy. She is fab, but not a sleeper. I haven't had a good nights sleep yet....and she won't take a bottle, a girl who knows her own mind.

Thanks for the encouragment....am tipping towards going, but have to persuade my hubby as well......

sorry I didn't finish my sentence - the 4 year old will also have views about what he is and isn't prepared to do - and might be horrendous when over tired!

footprint · 09/06/2005 16:10

I would love to go with my dd - we are hoping to go next year.

Have been 4 times BB (before baby!) and I think it would be fine. You can camp in the family field, hang out in the green fields and caberet field, no problem.

Just make sure you don't lose them! That would be my biggest fear.

Incidently, how many grown-ups in your group? Will you be able to have a bit of time away from the children at all?

flamesparrow · 09/06/2005 16:12

I wanna come... kids and all!

footprint · 09/06/2005 16:13

Flamesparrow - maybe next year we should form a mumsnet group. Could take it in turns with the children!!!

Fennel · 09/06/2005 16:20

I would be terrified of losing them. when I went I lost various friends - as soon as you let go for a moment they've disappeared in the crush and you can't find them again for hours.

I would take them to something smaller and less crowded though.

saw a tip in a newspaper article on taking kids to festivals - use a wheelbarrow, they suggested.

they also said take one more adult than you have children, which rules out us going with 3. we would need 2 extra adults.

tarantula · 09/06/2005 16:26

Id join the group only I know well not have the money to go next year either Never mind well have to do with a few one day free festivals and the odd weekend away camping .

vickiyumyum · 09/06/2005 17:01

i would say go and second what frizbee said, the family area is ok and has plenty of facilities.

the only negative about taking kids is that you don't really get to go and watch the music, unless you take it in turns with your dh. when we went with two kids 4 1/2 year old and a 6mo we just spent most of out time in the family areas and listening to the music, only got to watch a couple of actual gigs!
do you know anyone else with kids going, if so travel and camp together and try and arranges a babysitting schedule for the gigs that you are desperate to see, then you can make the most of it.

moschops · 09/06/2005 17:07

Glastonbury isn't on next year.......they have to take a year off every so often for licensing reasons and also to let the ground recuperate.

if you go to the website i listed earlier they have all the festivals on there and lots of people who can advise which ones to do with kiddies........there are lots of smaller more affordable festivals all through the summer.

we have two local to us which are more like the Greenfields area of Glasto (those that have been will know what i mean)

i'm soooooo jealous of those of you doing festivals this year.........i'm too pregnant to cope with camping so no holiday for me this year

flamesparrow · 09/06/2005 18:22

Oooh - the year after next would be better for me anyway... Hoping to have a newborn by next summer, but they will be more robust for the one after !!!

Pollyanna · 09/06/2005 18:26

Frizbe, is it better to camp in the greenfield or the kidz field?

Perhaps we should have a meetup Niceglasses - in the NCT tent!

I looked at ebay yesterday to see how I can sell my tickets - I keep changing my mind too about whether to go. (I'm definitely not going to stay if it changes into a mudbath though - I've already decided that).
