B/f and I have been invited to a party on the 31st of May, on the invite it says Evening Dress. I have no money, am too fat, have no one I know who could lend me anything, nothing that I could adapt and I desperatley want to go. I have never worn an evening dress and would love to. Have done an internet search and hiring is about £75, which is 2 weeks food shopping!! The charity shops in Wigan are also pretty short on that type of thing, I know this as I'm a regular customer!!
Some one please find me a fairy Godmother quick, before I turn into a pumpkin.

BTW I'm in N. Cheshire, so not too far away, but would be willing to post it if you could return it.

fantastic thread - meanmum, soupdragon and berries I think you've started something here - oh and do tell us how it your evening goes, lilibet!

berries · 22/05/2003 22:26

Lilbet, suspect it may not fit as I'm 36C and that's the only place it's too tight (but at least we have an asset worth drawing attention to, eh!) Anyway, am willing to post it on the off-chance, and we can work out a way of getting it back later (no rush). If you want to try, e-mail me at berries63 (yes I am 40 this year) at American OnLine dot Com (use the caps IYWSIM)

PS - forgot to say am going away tomorrow til Wed, so need to get in quick

meanmum · 28/05/2003 21:28

Lillibet - I've just responded to the email you sent to me this morning but just in case you don't dial up to your email wanted to let you know I have sent them already. They are going to arrive at your house tomorrow morning as I posted them special delivery. I think they should fit but it doesn't matter if you don't use them. I didn't put my details in the envelope but you have them on my email, or, if you don't then email me again.

Have a wonderful evening.

So...what happened? Did you go to the ball? What did you wear? Was it fabulous?

lilibet · 03/06/2003 20:04

I was cinderella!! Well, sort of, This cinders only got to bed after the sun rose and that was in a very posh hired frock cos her dear darling b/f was too drunk and tired to tackle the hooks and eyes, but it still looked fabulous when I got up! It was a wonderful night and morning and I enjoyed every moment. The best comment I overheard was from a woman who I had spent the evening with in April and she didn't recognise me! And came out with a very loud "oh my God, really!" when someone told her it was me. I can scrub up well with an awful lot of effort. Many many thanks to meanmum and soupy for their wonderful dresses and they were posted back yesterday and to everyone else for really kind words, your'e all totally wonderful sob sob!

And b/f looked gorgeous in the evening suit! Such a shame about the total over indulgence in alcohol (imagine a wink!)

Oh how fab lilibet, glad you had a great time, feel your post should be read accompanied by the song 'we could have danced all night' or something similar!

SoupDragon · 03/06/2003 20:53

I'm delighted that you had such a fabulous time!!

meanmum · 03/06/2003 21:14

I've got a huge grin on my face at the moment as I'm so chuffed it was everything you wanted it to be. Sometimes when you build up to things they are such an anti-climax so I am so happy it was the perfect evening for you.

Got the dresses back but haven't managed to unpack them yet. Thanks for sending them back so quickly.

SoupDragon · 04/06/2003 08:58

I've just found my dress on my doorstep This thread made me go and check!

SueW · 04/06/2003 13:41

I can't find the thread I started about needing a dress but - I've got one!

I went to John Lewis today with mum and looked at fabrics. I'd sort of decided to have a skirt/top combo with straight cut black velvet skirt and contrast top - some gorgeous fabrics available.

Then we went to a hire shop and I tried every dress on in 16, 18, 20! I found one combo that I fell in love with but I didn't like it when I stepped back from the mirror - I felt like I was a walking dress and all anyone would see was the outfit iyswim.

Eventually, I agreed to try on the plain black velvet and of course it felt like an old friend. It's full length, properly shaped and v neck. I tried on some costume jewellery - earrings and a chunky diamante choker and felt the best I had all day. But we felt it was pretty expensive for what it was. We had spent a good hour trying things on and the assistant had been really helpful. She offered out of the blue to pop down and see if she could get it reduced as I had said I would prefer to buy a dress like that - and yep 50% off!!! Woo hoo.

lilibet · 04/06/2003 18:16

Sue, I hope you have as good a night as I did. I was much the same with a dress, the lady showed me something in plain black that I wasn't keen on, persuaded me to try it and I felt fantastic, and that is more than half the battle. Have a great night.

Sue, that's great - and a 50% discount is fantastic! Bet you'll look gorgeous.

I hope you have a wonderful time too - put all your troubles aside and dance the night away...

meanmum · 04/06/2003 22:53

SueW have a fantastic time. You could have borrowed mine if you had wanted I just didn't get time to offer on your original thread. I'm so pleased you have found the perfect dress and it is at a price that you like just as much. Have a wonderful evening and let us all know. There's nothing like sharing the evening with you vicariously.
