dd1 (5.5) threw bubble mixture at the cat

I was so cross that I said she couldnt watch Lemony Snicket (which she is despearte to see). Now I regret it as she is so contrite.

But I feel I must not go back on my word.

What would you do?

Nooooooooooooooooooooo!

mytwopenceworth · 06/06/2005 16:54

imo, if we give in we are teaching our children that we dont mean what we say instead of teaching them that actions have consequences. they will learn that they only have to nag at us and we will give in to them (repeat enough times and fast forward 10 years and we have nightmare, uncontrollable teenager!!!!!!)

starlover · 06/06/2005 16:55

your DH just wants a quiet life! But it won't be quiet if she does this EVERY time you say she can't do something.

put your foot down... show her who's boss!

god, i am SO evil.

happymerryberries · 06/06/2005 16:56

sorry, no has to mean no

MarsLady · 06/06/2005 16:57

I think you need to be firm, tell her that you said no and that that is the end of it. Put the film away so that she can't see it and then get her to help you with tea. Distraction time I think, but no giving in.

madmarchhare · 06/06/2005 16:59

ML - bet me to it, although I was going to go for completely ignoring her now!

Enid · 06/06/2005 17:02

have done that

put the film away, made her feed the cat and help me cut up some fruit and she is now happier

will get it again on Friday night if she is good this week (but wont tell her obviously)

dh will be gutted as he thought he'd miss having to help with the kids and could sit and watch a film and eat pretzels

Good on you girl! Motherhood is strong!

jac34 · 06/06/2005 17:06

Stick to your guns!!!
I always do and my DS's know it!!!
I'm the woman who confescated all Easter Eggs on Easter Sunday, and they had to earn each one of them back with good behaviour.
We told the boys we would take them to see Star Wars on the weekend(even though I thought it was too old for them), because they realy wanted to see it. However, they were both naughty, so no Star Wars!!Still have not given in even though one DS cried for ages.We said if behaviour improves we may go next weekend.
My one DS was most angry with himself, as he knew he had it in the bag then blew it!!

JoolsToo · 06/06/2005 17:06

Enid - I would tell her that you are going to get it out again if she is good. That way you might get an extra well behaved child between now and then

noddyholder · 06/06/2005 17:26

ok ok you did the right thing I am a useless parent

Blu · 06/06/2005 17:27

Personally I think this is a very good reason not to have a cat.

Take note, MotherInferior!

And withdraw DH's pretzel privelidges for such wimpy parenting!

MarsLady · 06/06/2005 17:40

I would leave it personally and not mention it again. Then on Friday when she's doing something good you can tell her that she can have the film as a treat. I think that if you tell them too soon you sometimes get the reverse of what you actually want. She'll be reminded about the film and may go for full blown tantrum.
