what does it mean...saw it in a US author's book :building X was kitty corner to building y...it intrigued me!

it means opposite corner...(I think, god might be wrong) but if you have a cross roads type situation with four buildings, kitty corner would be the one diagonally opposite...

I think it means diagonally opposite. I've heard it a lot - my American grandmother used to use the expression - but I've never been completely sure.

originally 'cater-corner' iirc, from Fr catre & Latin quattuor
ie where four roads meet

cf Carfax in Oxford where the four main roads meet in the town centre
