When you're in hospital/visiting people in hospital do you find it 'offensive' when you find a copy of the Gideon Bible inside your bedside cupboard????

Please answer the question before looking at the link

Yes. I hate that sort of thing. I was christend as a baby. i dont consider myself to be christian. Although im considered as one in polls, such as when they say there are so many christians in brittain

Caligula · 02/06/2005 21:18

Not at all. But I wish they'd put something a bit more interesting there, like the complete works of Oscar Wilde, or a biography of an obscure Victorian murderer.

joash · 02/06/2005 21:44

Not offensive - just pointless and get more annoyed at the assupmtion that I might be remotely interested in it. Plus it takes up valuable knicker space in the drawer .

"Usual Sunday attendance 900,000." Hm. Not exactly 71% of the population...

ermmm Jan that's just talking about the CoE the nondenominatioal churches are MASSIVE, some of them have 1000's (literally) of people attending each Sunday, when you take into account Baptist, Methodist, CoSc, United Reform, Presbetyrian, Salvation Army etc etc - I'm sure you'll find it's a LOT more than 900,000 each sunday.

And lets not forget that the figures you've quoted are for Churc attendance, the Census is for those who call themselves Christians. My DH is a very commited Christian, but due to a rather 'unreliable' 18 month old (who often isn't ready to go to church at 10am on a Sunday morning) he stays at home quite often, he can't attend evening services either as there's no creche available, and someone needs to feed the boys their dinner.

Knicker space, Joash? Don't you mean Pringle space? At least, that's what I kept in my hospital locker!

Seriously though. The Bible is a book. No-one has to read it if they don't want to. And even if you don't believe - or are unconvinced (like me) - it contains some ripping yarns, some great poetry and some stuff to think about too. In fact... put like that, I'm sorry the Gideons didn't leave me one for my 10-week stay!

Can MRSA really live on books for long enough to be passed from one person to another? I thought it needed 'human-type stuff' (sorry...not a medical expert... had you noticed?) like skin or poo or something to live on. (But as I have just made patently clear, I know nothing, so perhaps should shut up now...)

Actually more of a Haribo girl myself - but trying to sound organised and not like the greedy cow that I am

stitch · 02/06/2005 22:29

no, because i am after all in a christian country. and i am appreciative of the fact that i am free to practice my religion here, in a way that simply isnt possible in other countries. and im including muslimm ones in that.

Blu · 02/06/2005 22:32

LOL at 'obscure victorian murder'

stitch · 02/06/2005 22:36

i wish the muslims would get organised enough to start putting the quran in hospitals like this, at least in muslim countries. but they wont.
i think its a lovely idea personally. its at times of stress that people often turn to religion, and having a bible around would be handy.
i would personally be offended if the pc lobby decided to remove them.
and im muslim.

morocco · 02/06/2005 22:51

I sugest a nice cabinet on each floor with every religion and cult invited to place their religious book in it should people feel a need to comparison shop before their operation

purplelizzy · 03/06/2005 07:33

It can't be all hospitals. I was in the Royal Free in Hampstead and didn't notice any bibles. Glossy magazines yes and I expect some of those were quite offensive to some of the clientele but bibles, no didn;t see any. If there was one I would probably just ignore it. I'm an atheist but it might be of help to some people. I suppose other religious groups could dontate their books and literature if they wanted to.
