My sister irons socks. Life is too short to stuff a mushroom!

breeze · 16/05/2003 16:38

All housework in unnecessary if you ask me

musica · 16/05/2003 16:46

Liz Hurley, after having her baby, said how much she was enjoying being a mum, and doing all those household tasks, like ironing babygros.....does she have too much time on her hands?

eefs · 16/05/2003 17:03

the only time I ever ironed regularly was when ds was just born, I got such a kick out of those tiny little outfits, so yes I did briefly have a career as a babygro ironer. It quickly passed, but I remember my mother ironing EVERYTHING (and she had 6 kids!)

scoobysnax · 16/05/2003 18:02

I ironed babygros - how could you not? They look nicer and feel more comfortable if you do, plus the high temperatures of an iron kills evil things.
I also can't understand why people would have poly cotton bedlinen at all, and why anyone would think unironed bedlinen was nice.
Dusting on the other hand, I have no truck with. At all.

Hilary · 16/05/2003 18:09

I have been a Mum for about 4 1/2 years and I can honestly say I have never ironed any clothes for either of my children! Mind you, I don't iron for either of us either!

No need!

breeze · 16/05/2003 18:20

I very rarely iron, and when I do, I have been known to get a tea-towel out and do it on the floor rather then getting the ironing board out.

ZsaZsa · 16/05/2003 18:34

Scoobysnax, everysing muss be ironing.
An everyone.
If you no iron in my country you look like riff raff

I'm with scoobysnax. I got sooo much pleasure out of ironing all my ds's baby clothes. I even ironed the muslin cloths and put them in neat piles! It can't just be a birth thing as even now (he's nearly 3) his clothes are all ironed and hung up (trousers together etc) in his wardrobe. Hadn't realised this was unusual!

Hate ironing my own stuff though and hubby does his own.

bea · 16/05/2003 19:41

oh dear i must confess to also getting a kick out of ironing dd's babygro's and sleepsuits (and evrything else that belongs to dd!) there's something very nice about all those little clothes all neatly folded ... though i do hate ironing my own clothes... and dh's 100's of t shirts... and hate putting them all away!... so i can't be that bad!.... or mad!

54321 · 16/05/2003 19:45

Breeze, why can't my friends be more like you and I? Life would be less stressful for me - sometimes I fear that someone will call on my unexpectedly !

Pancake · 16/05/2003 20:10

I have just "weaned" myself off ironing muslin cloths ... but can't bring myself not to iron vests and sleepsuits!

Mad mad mad!!!!

charliecat · 16/05/2003 20:14

I put my ironing in one of those old biddies shopping bags and give it to my mum and she does it, i think that started when she used to come round and there was nowhere to sit because there was 6 weeks worth of ironing hogging all the chairs...yes, really!

Mog · 16/05/2003 20:49

I'm with the iron ladies on this one. Not house proud at all but love to see those little piles of ironed babygros. Must be some kind of psycological disorder but at least makes you feel like there is some order in the chaos!

Mocha · 16/05/2003 20:58

I iron babygros, sleepsuits and muslins too. MIL was here today and she has done all the ironing for me. DP wears cotton shirts with double cuffs for work, they are a bugger to iron. I always iron DP & DD's clothes first and leave mine until absolutely necessary.

WedgiesMum · 16/05/2003 21:13

Nooooooo - all that ironing yakky. I just stuff all the kids clothes in the tumble drier and it comes out flat enough for me - and soft too. DH irons his own stuff if he wants it doing and I usually manage to get him to do my work stuff too....

snickers · 16/05/2003 21:15

I like ironing DDs clothes. Don't do PJs and muslins tho... Gosh no!

Like ironing DHs shirts, but HE hates ME ironing his shirts.. a bit particular that one...

HATE ironing trousers of any kind, and long skirts and dresses are a faff. Iron my teeshirts, and that's about all I live in with jeans these days.

DH occasionally does ALL the ironing in the house when the enormous piles of it irritate him too much... Yeeeeeeeee-hah!

steppemum · 17/05/2003 05:46

almost all ironing is considered unecessary in our house! I'd never iron babygros, vests etc, there's too many of then, and I always need to start on the clean ones before I have done the ironing.
I hang dh's shirts up to dry on hangers, so that sorts most of those out, and I like soft stretchy roll necks etc which don't need ironing! The one thing i hate about summer is all that lovely cotton stuff that has to be ironed

vkr · 17/05/2003 08:01

I hate ironing with a passion yet iron everything - including muslins - what is wrong with me ?

lisaj · 17/05/2003 08:34

I hate ironing too - I find it so depressing to see the ironing pile growing and growing! It usually gets to the stage that I have to do some 'emergency' ironing as ds or dh need trousers or work shirts etc. Winter is definitely better where ironing is concerned as so much less needs to be done, and fleecy material is brilliant, as it never needs to be ironed!

ironing-will only do it if absolutely necessary. I try and buy crease free clothes, or throw them in dryer and put on hangers.

cleaning windows-waste of time

wiping light fittings- not my scene

polishing brass-who admires shiny brass nowadays

Lindy · 17/05/2003 09:39

I'm another ironer - it is one of those chores that doesn't really bother me, unlike washing kitchen floor, cleaning oven, chnaging sheets or almost anything else!! I always iron babygrows, vests, muslins, t-towels - everything really ! There's only 3 of us and I tend to do each 'wash load' each day so it rarely takes more than 5 mins. I think it helps if you have the space to leave the iron & board out all the time as it's ofent the lugging it out of the cupboard that's a pain.

Must stop & do some now rather than talk about it!

Lennie · 17/05/2003 13:59

I iron all DS' stuff, including vests, pyjamas and his cot sheets. Also used to iron the cloth nappies we use to mop up stuff but decided that was a bit too anal. I hate ironing but get a strong sense of satisfaction from turning a pile of crumpled laundry into nicely scented, smooth clothes. I expect this phase to pass when I get back to work and do not have so much time on my hands
