TaxiLady · 16/08/2009 14:26

sort of clo-arn...but in one syllable iyswim

is there a prize??

RedLentil · 16/08/2009 14:32

Clo (clover) han (hannah), though the irish version suggests it might be cluck aun ...

Either stabs at it would be fairly respectable.

Clough as in lough or loch (like Loch Ness) then Anne.

Thanks for the replies. It was a bit of a wild goose chase actually. I thought I'd found an ancestor born in Cloyne, Co Kerry so thought maybe it was just a phonetic spelling of Cloghane. But it turns out she was born in Co. Cork in a village called, er, Cloyne.
But if I ever go to Cloghane, which I quite fancy doing now, I'll be able to impress them with my superior pronunciation. So thanks everyone.

If you go to Cloyne, you must go into the very posh Castlemartyr hotel nearby!
