Our cats vanished a week into our holiday and if we'd known, the DDs would have been distraught and insisted on going straight home to look for them, missing a week of sun and fun. So no, definitely not.

I remember our pet rabbit meeting the same grisly end whilst my mother was in hospital having a fairly major op. We went to see her just as she was coming round from the general anaesthetic and had been told not to say anything. My grandad unfortunately blabbed immediately . Tact was never his strong point

I think I would probably want to know, but I wouldn't tell ds until we got home so as not to spoil the holiday for him.

We're going on holiday this weekend and tbh I'm afraid that my 14 year old dog who is currently unwell may die while we're away. If she does then I think that I do want to know.

DD1's friend was minding our goldfish while we were in Italy, and sent a text to say he was swimming a little sideways. DD2 came out with the immortal line 'That bitch has killed my fish'. In fact, with some Interpet Gold he swam again another year. Our holiday was almost ruined though!

I will be devastated when my dog dies, and she was my first guide dog and changed my life, but harsh as this may sound, if she dies while we're away then coming home isn't going to achieve anything is it?

me and MIL are looking after the bunnies between us. It happened on her watch. She left them in the run overnight (they live next to a golf course so foxes are rife)

Next morning one had lept back into it's hutch, the other one was gone. Wire broken on run, blood on wire and clumps of bunny fur on the lawn....

(DD2 was 10. I suspect she has seen too many inappropriate telly programmes).

I empathise with your situation, but your thread title is couched in the same terms DD uses to break bad news to me, and I broke out in involuntary giggles.

"Mummy, can you get rings back up from between floorboards?" etc.

In our family we use the old "The rabbit's on the roof" line - I think for me, I'd rather know in advance and take or plan remedial action before I got home, rather than unpack to a cacophony of grief.
